Ten preschool places per session, with learning alongside Reception children: Coupe Green’s nursery begins school life in a shared early years class. Acorn Class brings the two age groups together within Coupe Green Primary School in Hoghton. This is a nursery experience already woven into the school day.
September entry is considered for children who have turned three by 31 August that year. Morning and afternoon sessions give families a choice of shorter days, while a lunchtime addition and access to Kids Club make longer attendance possible. The preschool operates during term time, rather than throughout the year.
Play, conversation and movement are the starting points. Children follow the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS), which combines learning with care and welfare requirements. Early attention goes to language, physical skills and managing feelings and relationships. These foundations support later work with numbers, reading and writing, creative expression and understanding the world.
Learning happens outdoors as well as inside, through exploration, active play and thinking through ideas. Staff select books and paintings to prompt curiosity. Each child has a learning journal, bringing observations together so that activities can respond to their needs. For parents, the emphasis is on development through experiences, rather than a day defined solely by formal lessons.
Lancashire Red Rose Phonics provides the named approach to early sound work, with daily phonics in Early Years. Talk for writing principles also shape the early writing approach: children explore a text and talk through stories before writing. Physical learning draws on the Lancashire PE Scheme of Work, with early years activities concentrating on basic movement through games.
For children using Kids Club, play continues in the school hall and outdoor spaces. Planting areas and a large scale construction area offer concrete opportunities to make and explore. Themes change each half term, shaping role play, creative activities and writing areas; games and toys also respond to individual interests.
Parents contribute moments of achievement from home to their child’s learning journal and receive updates about progress during the year. That gives home experiences a place in the learning picture. After accepting a preschool place and returning the required agreement, families receive a welcome pack.
Children attending for the full school day can bring lunch from home or have a school dinner for an additional charge. Meals are prepared on site through Lancashire County Council, and parents select meals ahead of time using Parentpay. Kids Club sessions include a drink and snack.
SEND support sits within the school’s arrangements. SEN Support Plans contain individual targets, with reviews each term shared with parents. Visual timetables and practical learning aids are among the resources used to support learning. This provides a structure for discussing a child’s needs and checking their next steps together.
Attending preschool does not guarantee a Reception place at Coupe Green. Reception requires a separate application through Lancashire’s school admissions route at www.lancashire.gov.uk/schools. Families must apply again through that process by its normal deadline.
Learning alongside Reception children already makes the older group part of preschool life. That everyday familiarity is separate from the admissions decision: sharing Acorn Class does not remove the need to apply.
Morning sessions run from 8.45am to 11.45am; afternoons run from 12.15pm to 3.15pm. The 11.45am to 12.15pm lunch session can extend either. Opening is Monday to Friday for 38 term-time weeks each year.
Universal funded provision covers 15 hours weekly during term time, with some families eligible for another 15 hours. Additional attendance, school dinners and Kids Club involve charges; contact the school for current charges. An annual class trip may be offered at extra cost, but participation is optional and children can attend preschool normally instead.
Preschool application forms are available from the school office. Call 01254 853518 or use the contact form for enquiries. Kids Club places are also booked through the office, giving families a single contact for preschool and wraparound arrangements.
