At a Glance

Nine places per session give this nursery its small-group character, while a shared Foundation Stage class puts children alongside Reception from the start. The class is called Explorers. Nursery children work daily with a qualified teacher trained in early years, making this a school-based introduction to learning rather than a separate preschool setting.

Children aged three and four can join from the term after their third birthday, subject to space. The nursery sits within Higher Walton Church of England Primary School on Rosewood Avenue. In May 2026, Ofsted judged early years to meet the Expected standard. Small cohorts allow learning to respond to nursery children's interests and individual development.

The Nursery Day

Adult-guided learning alternates with play that children choose themselves. The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) covers seven areas of development: friendships, movement and language receive particular emphasis, alongside early literacy, maths, creative work and understanding the world. For parents, that means learning to communicate and manage feelings matters alongside beginning to read and count.

Rainbow Challenge gives children opportunities to choose and work independently; the Growth Mindset approach encourages them to keep trying. Explorers' routines include snacks, outdoor play, stories and focused literacy or maths activities. During the Spring into Life theme, children investigated growth and life cycles, listened to surrounding sounds and recorded observations in drawings. There is something concrete to talk about at home.

Children have an indoor learning space and an outdoor area used across the seasons, including wet weather. Regular outdoor learning and weekly PE add movement to the day. The site's Forest School area was developed with Lancashire Wildlife Trust, and every class has opportunities to learn outdoors there.

The May 2026 early-years findings give substance to the teaching approach: conversations extend vocabulary, phonics teaching is consistent, and staff develop early maths and writing. Children practise letter formation and apply writing to topics such as the conditions seeds need to grow. These are findings about early years collectively, rather than a separate nursery judgement.

Care and Support

Settling rests on relationships with familiar adults. In May 2026, children in early years settled readily, with staff relationships supporting their confidence. Care respected children's dignity, while adults encouraged independence and persistence with learning.

Tapestry learning journeys, parent evenings and workshops keep families involved in development and next steps. An induction process and an open-door approach provide further contact. For children with special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND), activities are adjusted: the May 2026 findings showed appropriate progress relative to their starting points.

Lunch can be a school meal or a packed lunch supplied by parents. Nursery families can apply for free school meals when their child attends a full day and the household receives a qualifying benefit. Sunrise Club provides breakfast for children arriving before 8.30am; Sunset Club includes a teatime snack. Parents supply nappies or pull-ups when needed.

Moving On to Reception

A separate application matters. Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place and carries no priority within the admission criteria. Lancashire's local authority allocates places, with priorities covering looked-after and previously looked-after children, accepted exceptional needs, siblings and distance from home.

Families apply again through the local authority's online route. For September 2026 entry, the deadline was 15 January 2026; that application cycle has passed. Sharing Explorers offers familiarity with the class, but does not change admission rights. After places are offered, a pre-school group runs each afternoon for a week in July, helping children get acquainted with future classmates and teachers.

Practical Information

Sessions run Monday to Friday across 38 term-time weeks, with no stretched-hours pattern. Choose 9am–12 noon, 12 noon–3.25pm, 12.30pm–3.25pm or 9am–3.25pm. Patterns can include mornings, full-time attendance or three full days, subject to availability.

The nursery accepts the 15-hour entitlement and, for eligible families, 30 funded hours. Additional hours, lunchtime supervision, meals and wraparound care attract charges. Request current charges from the school. Sunrise Club and Sunset Club extend care from 7.30am until 5.30pm on school days.

Uniform combines a yellow polo shirt and royal blue sweatshirt with dark trainers and black or navy bottoms. Contact the office on 01772 335945 or bursar@walton.lancs.sch.uk for a nursery application; guided tours can also be arranged.
