Set within a sprawling 450-acre campus near Preston, Myerscough College offers an alternative reality to the traditional sixth form experience. This is a specialist land-based and sports institution where the classroom is often a farm, a golf course, or a motorsport workshop. For students with a clear vocational direction—whether in agriculture, animal studies, or greenkeeping—it offers facilities and industry connections that general colleges cannot match.

Mr Wes Johnson has been Chief Executive and Principal since September 2023. Under his leadership, the college is navigating a period of improvement following a Requires Improvement judgement from Ofsted in November 2023. However, the residential provision was rated separately as Outstanding in November 2024, highlighting a stark contrast between the educational challenges and the exceptional care students receive.

Turn off the A6 at Bilsborrow and the scale of the operation becomes clear. The campus feels less like a school and more like a working industry hub. Students in overalls head to the commercial farm, while others in team kit move towards the sports academy. The atmosphere is purposeful, practical, and adult.

There are no school uniforms or bells here. Students are treated as trainees from day one, an approach that suits those ready for independence but can be a shock for those needing structure. Myerscough is a vocational specialist. While the college appears in A-level performance data, the current FindMySchool dataset treats it as not rankable for A-level outcomes because there was only 1 exam entry. For families, this data is a poor guide to the college's work. The vast majority of students study BTECs, City & Guilds, or T-Levels, which are not captured in A-level rankings.

Success here is measured by industry competence and employability. Leavers progress into employment, further education, apprenticeships, and university, often to specialist degrees in veterinary nursing or agriculture, including at Myerscough’s own University Centre. The curriculum is built around "doing". Theory is taught, but it is immediately applied. A lesson on crop science happens in the fields; vehicle diagnostics are taught under the bonnet of a rally car. Tutors are typically industry experts—former head greenkeepers, veterinary nurses, or motorsport engineers—who bring real-world experience to the workshop.

The November 2023 Ofsted inspection rated the quality of education as Requires Improvement, citing inconsistencies in curriculum planning and high needs provision. However, a monitoring visit in November 2024 noted "Reasonable Progress" across most areas and "Significant Progress" in the quality of feedback students receive, suggesting the college is on an upward trajectory.

As a land-based college, Myerscough offers extensive residential accommodation for over 600 students. This provision is the jewel in the college's crown, rated Outstanding by Ofsted in November 2024. Inspectors praised the "exceptional" behaviour management and the way students "embrace their identities" within a safe, inclusive community.

Halls of residence range from self-catering to catered options (typically 5 days a week). Living on campus eliminates the commute and allows full immersion in early morning farm duties or late sports training.

Fees & Financial Aid

This is a state-funded college, so there are no tuition fees for UK students aged 16-18.

However, families choosing the residential option must pay accommodation fees. For the 2025/26 academic year, residential fees typically range from £5,500 to £7,500 per year depending on the room type and catering package. Bursaries are available for families on lower incomes to help with these residential costs, alongside transport and equipment support.

Entry is broadly inclusive but requires specific interest. Most Level 3 courses (equivalent to A-levels) require 4 or 5 GCSEs at Grade 4 or above, usually including English and/or Maths. The college also offers courses from Level 1 upwards, providing a ladder for students with different starting points.

Applications are made directly via the college website. Popular courses like Animal Studies and Motorsport fill up quickly, so applying early in Year 11 is recommended.

Moving away from home at 16 is a significant step, but the pastoral infrastructure is robust. The Outstanding rating for residential care confirms that safeguarding and student support are exceptional. Each student has a Progress Coach, and the dedicated residential team provides 24-hour support.

Extracurricular life is dominated by the specialisms. The Rugby Academy is renowned, while the Motorsport team runs actual race cars, with students providing pit crew support at events across the country. Facilities include a fully commercial Plant World, an international equestrian centre, and a 9-hole golf course.

The college runs an extensive bus network covering Lancashire, Merseyside, and Greater Manchester, crucial for day students. The academic year follows standard terms, but students on land-based courses may have duties that rotate outside standard hours.

Requires Improvement rating. The main education provision was rated Requires Improvement in 2023. While inspectors noted "Reasonable Progress" in late 2024, families should ask about the specific consistency of teaching on their chosen course.

Specialist commitment. This is not a place to "try out" a subject. Courses are substantial. A student starting a Level 3 Extended Diploma in Agriculture needs to be sure that is their path.

Location and travel. Winter mornings on the farm or sports pitches are exposed and demanding. Day students can face long commutes, though the bus network is extensive.

Myerscough College is a heavyweight in land-based and sports education, offering facilities that are simply unrivalled in the sector. While the overall education rating requires improvement, the "Significant Progress" noted by inspectors and the "Outstanding" residential care provide reassurance. Best suited to practical learners who have found their vocation and are ready to trade the classroom for the workshop, farm, or pitch.
