At a Glance

Play, conversation and growing independence shape Scorton's nursery provision. It forms part of Scorton Church of England Primary School, on Snowhill Lane in Scorton, with early learning organised through Bowland Class. The emphasis is on children's interests alongside planned learning, giving their own choices a place in the curriculum.

Ofsted judged the school's early years provision Outstanding at its inspection on 14 and 15 January 2025. That judgement covers the school's early years, rather than a separately inspected nursery. Children joining the nursery received exceptional help to become more independent and confident, a meaningful strength for families considering their child's first experience of school.

The Nursery Day

The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) brings together seven areas of learning. Physical development, communication and children's social and emotional development provide the starting point. Literacy, mathematics, expressive arts and exploring the world extend that learning. In parent terms, talking, moving and learning to get along sit alongside early understanding of numbers, words and creativity.

Children's choices and activities directed by adults both contribute to the day. Learning connects with their interests, while planned knowledge and skills give it direction. This means play has a learning purpose as well as room for children to follow their curiosity.

Bowland Class uses development trackers across the EYFS curriculum. These cover areas such as language, physical development and mathematical development, helping staff follow individual learning rather than relying on a single overall picture. In January 2025, early years staff had specialist understanding of child development, checked children's understanding closely and targeted help at gaps in learning.

The wider school grounds include a pond, a woodland nature area, a playground and a multi-use games area. These are school facilities. Within early years design and technology, children practise making choices and developing movement skills through play provision: practical learning starts with what young children can do themselves.

Care and Support

Cooperation is part of everyday early learning. In January 2025, children in the early years worked together readily, responded promptly to adults and willingly helped put things away. Those routines give children opportunities to contribute to a group and practise independence.

Scorton aims for children with different learning needs to participate together, adapting classroom organisation and lessons towards that goal. The headteacher also holds the special educational needs coordinator role, bringing those responsibilities together.

School lunches come from the kitchen at St Thomas' CE Primary School and arrive daily for serving at lunchtime. This is the school's meal arrangement.

Moving On to Reception

Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate Reception application through the normal admissions route by the normal deadline. Treat choosing nursery and applying for Reception as two distinct decisions.

Practical Information

For enquiries, contact the school office on 01524 791596 or email bursar@scorton.lancs.sch.uk. Families can arrange to look around the school and have a conversation before deciding. A visit provides a useful opportunity to consider how the school setting suits your child.
