At a Glance

A special chair for the nursery’s Star of the Week gives Pudsey Waterloo’s youngest children a concrete way to celebrate achievement. The weekly Celebration Assembly, usually held on Friday, also makes room for birthdays and accomplishments beyond school. Children can share certificates or trophies, bringing something of their home lives into the nursery group.

This is Pudsey Waterloo Primary’s own nursery, on Victoria Road in Pudsey. In May 2022, Ofsted judged the school’s early years provision Good. That judgement covers early years within the school, rather than a separately inspected nursery.

The Nursery Day

Morning and afternoon sessions give the day two clear shapes: 8.40am to 11.40am, or 12.30pm to 3.30pm. Within the nursery’s celebration routine, a child with a birthday can bring a favourite present and two cards to share before the group sings. Recognition is personal and tangible: the Star of the Week receives a certificate as well as the special chair.

Newly hatched chicks gave early years children something concrete to discuss and write about in May 2022. Learning about other young animals broadened that experience. For parents, the example shows how observation can give children a reason to use new words. Planning built on what children already knew and could do, with language development woven through their learning.

Books have a physical place in the classroom too. Each classroom has a book corner, with books selected for the children’s interests and stage of learning. Classes have storytime at least four times weekly, making shared stories a recurring part of school life. The early years foundation stage here brings together language development and growing independence.

Care and Support

For concerns about a child’s development or additional needs, the class teacher is the first contact. Families can also reach the SEND team at senteam@waterloo.owlcotesmat.org. That gives parents a direct route for discussing support.

Food is part of Extra Club’s care before and after school, which nursery children can attend. Breakfast choices include yoghurt, toast, cereal and fruit, with water and fruit juice. Children needing breakfast should arrive before 8.30am. After school, fruit and vegetables accompany a changing snack, such as pasta, wraps or pitta bread. These arrangements belong to the club sessions.

Moving On to Reception

Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate Reception application through the normal admissions route and meet the applicable deadline. Choosing nursery and applying for Reception are separate decisions; familiarity with the school should not be treated as an allocation promise.

Practical Information

Nursery enquiries go through the school office on 0113 3230342. Visits can also be arranged by contacting the school.

Extra Club welcomes nursery children before school, from 7.30am to 8.50am, and afterwards, from 3.15pm to 6pm. Its base is the school atrium, accessed through the Nursery glass door. Booking forms go to the office or extraclub@waterloo.owlcotesmat.org; session changes also use a form. Contact the school for current charges.
