Nursery at Southroyd Primary and Nursery School

Learning begins at two at Southroyd, with nursery provision forming part of the school on Littlemoor Crescent in Pudsey. Its early years curriculum makes room for children developing at different speeds. That matters when choosing a first educational setting: the starting point is the child's stage of development.
Exploration and practice give the learning its shape. At the January 2025 inspection, Ofsted found that early years teaching was planned around differing developmental needs and that children enjoyed trying out their learning. The emphasis is on opportunities to use developing skills, rather than simply encounter something new.
Language has a named place in the wider Southroyd curriculum through Top Talking, which focuses on explicitly teaching spoken communication. The school's English aims also encompass its Early Years and Foundation Stage curriculum, bringing listening, speaking, reading and writing together. Drama and role play are among its intended methods where appropriate. For a young child, this places expressing ideas and attending to other people alongside the beginnings of literacy.
Early writing. The January 2025 inspection identified a school-wide concern: some beginners faced writing tasks before they had secured handwriting and sentence-building basics. This was not identified specifically as a nursery finding, but it makes the sequence of early writing instruction a relevant consideration for families.
An Early Years SENCo sits within the SEND team, giving families a role specifically concerned with support at this stage. The school's process starts with discussing concerns with the class teacher; the SENCo can then become involved, and parents can arrange a meeting directly.
Support is organised around individual needs. A provision map, when appropriate, records a child's strengths and difficulties before setting out classroom adaptations, personalised help and specialist advice. Termly SEND reviews bring parents into discussions about progress, successes and revised targets. This gives families a regular opportunity to contribute what they see at home.
Speech and language support has a concrete structure across the school. A specialist therapist attends weekly to assess children or train staff in delivering interventions. Following assessment, targets and resources guide sessions delivered by a staff member, with reassessment as targets are reached or nearly reached. Referral goes through the SENCo, so concerns about communication have a defined starting point.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate Reception application through the normal admissions route.
For the September 2026 intake, the school's admissions information directed families to Leeds' online application service and gave 15 January 2026 as the deadline. That cycle is now past. Treat the nursery decision and the later school application as separate steps; a nursery place should never be taken as confirmation of a Reception offer.

For families planning their journey, Southroyd encourages walking or cycling where possible and participates annually in Walk and Cycle to School Week.
Southroyd's nursery admits children from the age of two.
No. Families need to apply separately for Reception through the normal admissions process.
Start with the class teacher. Parents can also arrange a SENCo meeting, and the SEND team includes an Early Years SENCo.
The SENCo can refer a child for specialist assessment. A resulting plan provides targets and resources for staff-led support, followed by reassessment as appropriate.
