At a Glance

Bishopswood’s nursery history includes specialist provision alongside a mainstream primary school. In 1987, the school negotiated the transfer of its nursery class to Valley Road Primary School in Henley. This placed the nursery within its model of specialist provision alongside mainstream partners.

Bishopswood serves children with severe learning difficulties, profound and multiple learning difficulties, and complex needs, including autism. The distinction matters for families: this is specialist educational provision, with learning organised around children’s individual needs.

The Nursery Day

Communication and independence are the school’s stated curriculum priorities. Across Bishopswood, learning targets connect to education, health and care plan (EHCP) outcomes. The aim is practical: helping children express themselves and develop skills they can use beyond a lesson. Progress is approached through individual targets rather than a single expectation for everyone.

Within the school’s sensory pathway, learning brings together thinking, communication, understanding oneself, community experiences, and care and independence. Activities include sensory stories, music, cooking, play and art. Attention and focus are explicit aims, giving children working at these developmental stages a starting point for further learning.

The communication pathway uses structured play and concrete, visual teaching approaches. It combines work on communication with sensory regulation and participation. For a parent, the useful distinction is the school’s emphasis on functional skills: communication is intended to help a child take part, interact with others and make choices. These are school-wide curriculum approaches, rather than a fixed nursery timetable.

Care and Support

Support extends to families. Bishopswood connects parents with the Oxfordshire Parent Carer Forum and Oxfordshire Family Support Network, providing routes to support beyond the classroom.

Participation in an Early Help Assessment is voluntary. This involves listening to the child and family, identifying needs and agreeing an action plan together. Its purpose is to coordinate the adults involved, including teachers and health visitors, so families can work towards shared support rather than repeatedly explaining their circumstances.

Moving On to Reception

Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Bishopswood’s specialist placement route involves the local authority Education Officer, and admission requires an EHCP. Decisions depend on whether the school can meet the child’s special educational needs and whether a place is available.

For the next placement, families should work through that local authority route. Transfers between departments can take place earlier or later according to the child’s needs. That flexibility concerns the timing of a move; it should not be read as a promise of a place.

Practical Information

Visits with a child are welcome, arranged by telephoning the school. The office can be contacted on 0118 972 4311 or at office@bishopswoodschool.co.uk.

School uniform is optional. Recommended clothing includes a navy fleece with a zip, a white polo carrying the Bishopswood badge, and grey bottoms, with trousers, a skirt or shorts as options. My Clothing supplies the uniform, and the office offers assistance. Families can therefore make clothing choices within an optional school-wide arrangement.
