Nursery at Loddon Primary School

Curiosity gives Loddon's nursery its clearest character: in February and March 2023, children showed an interest in learning from their nursery start. This is the nursery provision within Loddon Primary School, on Silverdale Road in Earley, Reading. Its early years sit within a wider school team, with a team leader for early years and teaching support staff working in early years.
Early reading starts early here. At the inspection on 28 February and 1 March 2023, Ofsted found that phonics began when children joined early years, with reading fluency developing soon afterwards. For parents, phonics means learning the sounds used to read words. It gives those first encounters with reading a clear teaching focus.
Play also has a social purpose. At that time, carefully planned activities and play alongside other children supported the youngest pupils. The practical value is learning with others as well as developing individual skills. Children in early years were developing their knowledge and skills across subjects, so the learning picture extended beyond reading alone.
Autumn induction affects the nursery's starting arrangements. Children have their own start dates, communicated to families in welcome letters. That matters when organising a child's first weeks: the general pupil start date is not automatically their nursery start date.
For children with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND), the school uses an Identification of Needs form to record initial concerns and a SEND Profile to track additional support and intended outcomes. These give discussions a concrete focus: what the child needs, what help is being provided and what that help should achieve.
Across the school, support follows Assess, Plan, Do, Review. Parents receive SEND Profiles, and teachers review them each term. The Inclusion Leader can be contacted through the office or at inclusion@loddon.wokingham.sch.uk. Families therefore have a direct route to discuss concerns alongside the child's teacher.
Safeguarding concerns should be raised urgently with school staff. The office can connect families with the safeguarding team, giving parents a clear contact route when a child's safety or welfare causes concern.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate application through the normal Reception process and meet its deadline. Loddon's Reception application route is Wokingham's school admissions service; a nursery application goes directly to the school. Treat them as two separate tasks.
For pupils with SEND, possible transition support includes extra classroom visits, discussions between the current and receiving teachers, and meetings involving parents and relevant professionals. A photo book or social story may also be used. These arrangements can help a child prepare for unfamiliar people and spaces; they are support measures, not an admissions advantage.
Nursery applications can be emailed to nurseryadmissions@loddon.wokingham.sch.uk or placed in the nursery admissions box at front reception. School visits can be requested by calling 0118 926 1449 or completing a request form. Weekday visit requests can specify a preferred time between 9:30am and 2:30pm, with the visit arranged at a mutually suitable time.
