Nursery at Manor Primary School

Daily stories, poems and a trip to a bookshop give Manor’s nursery a clear character: language and books matter from the start. This is the nursery within Manor Primary School in Reading, with provision for three-year-olds. The school timetable identifies it as Foundation Stage 1, with morning, afternoon and a longer day for children taking the 30-hour option.
Ofsted graded early years provision Good at the inspection on 28 February and 1 March 2023. That judgement covers the school’s early years provision, rather than a separately inspected nursery.
Talk is a central part of early learning here. In February and March 2023, children learned poems and heard stories daily, giving them opportunities to listen and build their vocabulary. Books also took learning beyond school: a nursery outing to a bookshop connected reading with a place children could explore.
Learning has a planned sequence from nursery onwards. Activities build on what children have already learned, helping them connect new ideas with familiar ones. For parents, this means the nursery curriculum has a progression behind it, alongside the concrete experiences of listening, talking and enjoying books.
The morning session runs from 8.45am to 11.45am; the afternoon runs from 12.15pm to 3.15pm. Children on the 30-hour pattern attend from 8.45am to 3.15pm. Those are distinct daily arrangements, so the session pattern matters when fitting nursery around family routines.
A nursery class teacher sits within the Foundation Stage team, alongside early years practitioners and teaching assistants. For communication, parents can pass brief information to teachers around the school day or use the Home School Diary. Appointments provide space for longer conversations, making a separate discussion possible when a quick message is insufficient.
Registration asks families about allergies, other medical needs and dietary requirements, as well as languages spoken at home. It also requests emergency contacts. These are practical opportunities to explain a child’s needs before attendance and keep essential information accurate afterwards.
Food preferences appear on the registration form, which asks families to choose between a school dinner and a packed lunch. School meals use ParentPay for booking and payment, with Caterlink named as the school’s caterer.
For additional needs, the school links to Brighter Futures for Children’s guidance for children aged 0–5. That guidance calls for parents to help agree learning goals and review targeted support. It provides a useful basis for discussing an individual child’s support with the team.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate application through Reading Borough Council and meet the deadline for their child’s admissions round.
Conditional priority. The arrangements for September 2025 entry included nursery attendance in category 6 only for children receiving Early Years Pupil Premium at application. Attendance alone did not qualify. Families considering a later intake should use that intake’s admission arrangements when assessing their position.
Nursery registration goes directly to the school office using the registration form. Families must show a birth certificate or other proof of birth date when handing it in. School visits can be arranged through the office by appointment.
The admissions page includes information about 15- and 30-hour nursery funding; the timetable directs families to Reading’s early years funding service to check eligibility. Keep the funding check separate from choosing the daily session pattern, so both the entitlement and attendance arrangement are clear.
