Nursery at Norcot Early Years Centre

Last reviewed: October 2026 · Inspection data and key information above update regularly, however, this review below is refreshed bi-annually and may not reflect recent changes. Contact the nursery directly to confirm current arrangements. If you spot anything outdated or inaccurate, please let us know.

At a Glance

Rainbow, Sun and Star Room give Norcot’s nursery provision its own identity, with garden learning built into the session rather than saved for an occasional outing. This maintained nursery school in Tilehurst caters for children aged three to five and eligible funded two-year-olds. It operates during term time within Norcot Early Years Centre, alongside the separate Waterside Day Care provision.

Specialist support also has a physical home here. Butterfly Room accommodates up to 20 part-time places for three-to-four-year-olds, with a classroom, sensory room and soft play room. These are specialist places, allocated through a Reading Borough Council professional panel separately from ordinary nursery admissions.

The Nursery Day

A morning starts with exploration before group learning, followed by choosing time, a snack, garden activities and a final story and phonics session. The afternoon follows the same sequence. That gives children time to pursue an interest, alongside shared moments that bring the group together. Phase 1 phonics features in the closing circle time.

The Early Years Foundation Stage, or EYFS, shapes the learning: children develop movement, language and relationships while exploring early reading, maths, creativity and the world around them. Play and adult guidance work together. In May 2024, Ofsted described learning adapted closely to individual children, including an outdoor snail discovery turned into a discussion about size. Maths had a reason to matter.

Books receive sustained attention. In May 2024, children explored a different book each half term, using symbols and signs to help retell it. This connects listening with participation, including for children who need another way to communicate.

Woodside, the centre’s Learning Through Nature area, adds a wooden shelter and decking to outdoor exploration. Children can hunt for small creatures, forage and experience cooking at an open fire pit, giving them concrete things to investigate and discuss. Within Butterfly Room, Forest School, the library and a large garden extend learning beyond the classroom; children also spend time with mainstream peers in Rainbow Room.

Care and Support

A child’s key person is a contact for developmental concerns, with the Inclusion Lead available for further discussion. Learning updates through Tapestry and termly progress meetings connect nursery experiences with home. The nursery’s Inclusion Lead is a qualified teacher and SENDCo, while the wider nursery team includes teachers, team leaders, early years practitioners and assistants.

For resource-base starters, settling begins with a new starter group and a keyworker introduction by phone, followed by an arranged home visit. Families can meet staff and other joining families before the child starts. This is a resource-base transition arrangement rather than a promise about every nursery admission.

SEND support uses Assess, Plan, Do and Review, with Personalised Education Plans setting small steps towards longer goals. Families help shape and review those steps. In May 2024, visual cards and choice boards supported communication, and adults adjusted activities in response to children’s learning. Ofsted found safeguarding effective at that inspection.

Snack time is part of both nursery sessions. At lunchtime in May 2024, children practised eating together through familiar routines, making independence part of care. An Early Help Support Worker can also help families with toileting, sleep routines and behaviour at home.

Moving On to Reception

Attending Norcot does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate application through the normal Reception admissions process and meet its deadline. Treat choosing a nursery and securing a primary-school place as separate decisions.

The centre offers transition support to schools and help with school application paperwork. These practical supports sit alongside the nursery’s work on friendships, turn-taking and independence; they do not replace the Reception application.

Practical Information

Morning sessions run from 08:15 to 11:15; afternoons from 12:00 to 15:00. The 30-hour pattern runs 08:15 to 15:00 Monday to Thursday and finishes at 11:15 on Friday. Universal funding provides eligible three-and-four-year-olds with 15 hours per week for 38 weeks per year, beginning the term after their third birthday. Eligible children can access 30-hour funding, and funded two-year-old places are also offered.

Paid extra sessions for three-and-four-year-olds depend on availability. Nursery wraparound care is for children aged three and over. After School Club and Tea Club run Tuesday to Thursday, ending at 16:00 and 18:00 respectively; a charged Friday extension runs 11:15 to 15:00 for children on the 30-hour pattern. Wraparound bookings require a term’s notice and depend on availability. Contact the school for current charges.

Arrange a visit or send nursery application forms to admin@norcot.reading.sch.uk. Pack named spare clothes and seasonal outdoor clothing. Drop off at the session’s start; early collection should be before 10:45 or 14:30 to protect story time. Access is from Bates Hill, with parent parking on nearby streets and onsite parking reserved for disabled access.
