At a Glance

Storytelling, number work and learning to manage small everyday tasks shape Little Knellies, The Abbey’s nursery for girls aged three to four. Based in Knell House beside the Junior School, it gives the youngest children their own base within the wider school. The nursery roll was 37 in February 2026; this figure counts children enrolled at that time, rather than available places.

The core offer is a full school week, with lunch included. That makes this a practical choice for families seeking a school-shaped nursery year, with additional care before and after the nursery day.

The Nursery Day

Communication and number are central to the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) curriculum here. In February 2026, ISI found that early-years children learned successfully through programmes designed around those priorities. For parents, the emphasis is on developing the language and understanding children use to explain ideas, ask questions and work with numbers.

Physical learning includes cutting with scissors and handling play dough, giving small hands practice in controlled movements. Specialist sessions in ballet, swimming and PE also feature in the early-years programme. These activities support larger movements alongside the finer coordination needed for everyday tasks.

Stories have a social purpose too. Children share imaginative tales with their peers as the audience, practise taking turns and vote on stories and activities. Those choices introduce the idea that other children may want something different. February 2026 findings also describe ongoing review of physical-development provision across outdoor and indoor spaces.

Care and Support

Lunch is part of the nursery fee, and early-years staff help children build independence with tasks such as using cutlery. Mealtimes therefore connect care with learning to do things for themselves. All early-years staff had paediatric first-aid training in February 2026.

Emotional development. The February 2026 inspection identified slower progress in early-years personal and emotional development than in other curriculum areas. Staff recognised small gains in managing feelings and coping, but this remained an area requiring further work. Families weighing the nursery should give this finding as much attention as the strengths in communication and number.

For children with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND), the school’s policy involves families in planning and reviewing support. Pupil Passports communicate individual needs and teaching strategies to staff. Admission depends on the school having the resources and facilities to meet a child’s needs, and parents must disclose known or suspected learning difficulties, disabilities and health conditions during the application process.

Moving On to Reception

Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families should ask the admissions team to confirm the internal Reception application process and deadline before assuming that a nursery place settles the next stage.

The January 2025 admissions policy describes informal assessments appropriate to the child’s age for Junior School entry. Where applicants meet the criteria and places are oversubscribed, possible preferences include siblings, registration date and close connections with the school. Nursery attendance should not be treated as an automatic entitlement to progress.

Practical Information

The nursery day runs from 08:15 to 15:45, with the main offer covering Monday to Friday. Term-time sessions span a 34-week academic year. Little Knellies holiday provision also appears in the school calendar, so distinguish the term-time nursery package from holiday care when planning the year.

Universal funded entitlement begins in the academic term following the child’s third birthday. It is offered from 12:30 to 15:30 across the school week, within an education package and subject to availability. An additional 15 funded hours depends on HMRC eligibility. Optional services, including after-school care, are billed separately; contact the school for current charges.

The nursery is on Vicarage Road. Children wear uniform, with a Nearly New Uniform Shop providing another purchasing route. Enquiries and individual tours can be arranged through admissions@theabbey.co.uk. Entry begins after a child turns three, in the academic year of their fourth birthday, with a nursery visit used to discuss needs and consider readiness.
