At a Glance

Child-chosen play takes up most of a Meadows session, with short key-group activities giving the day its shared moments. This is The Ambleside Centre’s provision for children aged 3 to 5 in Woodley, Reading. Meadows is the focus here; Pastures serves the younger age group.

Independence has a practical place in the curriculum. Children choose resources and pursue interests both outside and indoors, while adults work beside them to extend their learning. That gives children scope to make decisions, alongside planned opportunities to learn with their group.

The Nursery Day

Most of the session belongs to children’s own choices about play and company. Adult-led group activities then introduce skills across the seven areas of the early years curriculum. For parents, the balance means time to explore independently and time to practise learning alongside others. Keyworkers adjust activities to the needs and interests of their group, rather than expecting every child to follow an identical path.

Ofsted’s inspection on 23 November 2021 found that teaching supported exceptional progress across learning and development. The examples make that judgement tangible: a playhouse became a prompt for practising language, while books positioned around the nursery encouraged children to handle pages and discuss stories. With Goldilocks and the Three Bears, children discussed illustrations and suggested what could happen next. Conversation was part of learning, rather than an activity confined to group time.

Mathematics also emerged through play in November 2021. Clay activities introduced comparisons of quantity; beads supported counting to five; shape games explored properties and names. These were concrete ways for young children to encounter mathematical ideas through objects they could handle.

Care and Support

Key-group activities serve a social purpose as well as a learning one: they help children build friendships and feel part of a group. Meadows has keyworkers, and its team leader also holds the SENCO role, connecting the nursery’s leadership with special educational needs coordination.

In November 2021, children settled readily into routines and developed trusting relationships with adults. Children with SEND participated throughout nursery life and made impressive progress. Staff had early years knowledge and qualifications, giving the teaching team a foundation for responding to children’s different needs.

Lunch offered another opportunity for independence at that time. Children served themselves vegetables and shepherd’s pie at tables, with adults ready to help. Safety also received close attention: safeguarding arrangements were effective, staff passed on concerns promptly, and leaders worked with children’s services. Children learned that their preferences mattered, including whether they wanted to hold someone’s hand.

For contact beyond the nursery day, parents can join the AmblesideNurseries Facebook group, which includes stories and home-learning ideas. The office also provides a route to speak with staff.

Moving On to Reception

Separate admissions. Attending Meadows does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate Reception application through the normal admissions process and meet the applicable deadline. Treat choosing this nursery and applying for a school place as separate decisions.

Practical Information

Meadows offers morning sessions from 09:00 to 12:00 and afternoon sessions from 13:00 to 16:00. Sessions depend on availability, and the reception staff handle discussions about the pattern a child needs.

The standard funded offer is 15 hours each week across at least three days, for 38 term-time weeks. Funding begins in the school term following a child’s third birthday. Eligible parents may claim another 15 funded hours; some children using the additional entitlement can instead receive up to 23 hours weekly across 48 weeks. Hours beyond the applicable funded allocation are chargeable. Ask reception staff about stretching funded hours before booking.

Holiday Club usually runs during ten weeks outside term time. Those sessions are chargeable unless covered by stretched funding. For enquiries, use office@ambleside.wokingham.sch.uk or call 0118 3776444. The centre is on Ambleside Close, Woodley, Reading, RG5 4JJ.
