At a Glance

A separate nursery building, its own sheltered outdoor space and access to woodland give Earlswood’s youngest children a base of their own within a larger school setting. The nursery occupies a self-contained building beyond the infant playground and belongs to the Earlswood Federation of Schools. A qualified teacher leads the provision.

Ducklings, Chicks and Goslings are the three nursery groups. Their different attendance patterns shape how families use the nursery, while the daily emphasis stays on play: children choose activities for themselves and also work with adults. That balance gives the day both direction and room for individual interests.

The Nursery Day

A settling activity begins each session. A shaker signals the gathering together, followed by an introduction to the learning choices. Independent Learning then gives children time to investigate activities indoors and outside; a daily group gathering brings number activities, rhymes, stories and time together into the routine. After lunch, children return to their chosen interests before an afternoon gathering celebrates what they have done.

The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) provides the curriculum framework. In everyday terms here, learning combines purposeful play, adult guidance and children’s own choices. Early-years art includes sensory experiences, experimenting with colour and making marks, giving children practical ways to explore and express ideas.

Outdoor learning extends beyond a single play space. Children can choose between the nursery’s indoor activities and its outdoor area, which has a partially sheltered section for use in different weather. Regular use of the federation’s library, halls, gardens, woodland, playing field, playground and trim trail broadens the spaces available for learning and movement.

In March 2024, Ofsted found that nursery teaching responded skilfully to children’s interests and that children maintained concentration while trying and practising ideas. Nursery listening activities also prepared children for later phonics learning. The wider school curriculum still needed clearer learning content in some subjects and more consistent checks on understanding, so gaps could be addressed sooner.

Care and Support

Families can send a healthy packed lunch or choose a paid hot meal served in the nursery. Children with lunchboxes eat at tables within the nursery. Nuts and products containing nuts must stay out of lunchboxes. For families using the longer sessions, this gives a choice between preparing lunch and ordering a meal. Ask the school for current hot-meal charges.

Children with additional needs are welcomed. Across the federation, a SEND team works outside classroom teaching roles and links with Surrey County Council and the NHS to access specialist help, including speech and language therapy and occupational therapy. This gives families a route into support beyond the nursery team.

A safeguarding and pastoral lead supports families attending both the nursery and school. Parent drop-in sessions and opportunities to telephone or talk about concerns provide direct contact when difficulties arise. Emotional support for children also includes the ELSA programme.

Moving On to Reception

Attending Earlswood’s nursery does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate application through the normal admissions process and meet its deadline. Surrey County Council is the school’s admission authority and provides the application route. Treat the nursery choice and the Reception application as separate decisions.

Practical Information

Goslings follows the 30-hour pattern, Monday to Friday, 8:40am to 3:00pm. The two 15-hour patterns divide the week: Ducklings attends Monday and Tuesday, 8:40am to 3:00pm, plus Wednesday, 8:40am to 11:15am; Chicks attends Wednesday, 12:30pm to 3:00pm, then Thursday and Friday, 8:40am to 3:00pm. These are set weekly patterns, so compare the actual days with your childcare needs.

Nursery access is through the Children’s centre gate on Ifold Road. For nursery enquiries or to arrange to see the provision, email infoinfants@earlswood.surrey.sch.uk or telephone 01737 765125.
