Stories and singing on Monday afternoons give Pendennis, Pennoweth’s nursery, a distinctive thread in its week. A volunteer governor joins the children for these sessions, bringing a regular contribution from the school community into nursery life. This is provision for three- and four-year-olds within Pennoweth Primary School on Drump Road in Redruth.
Safety and feeling loved come first in Pennoweth’s approach. The school believes those foundations help children take responsibility and become ready to learn. For parents choosing an early school experience, that places relationships alongside learning as an explicit priority.
Language is a meaningful strength in the nursery’s early learning. At the Ofsted inspection on 4 and 5 May 2022, staff’s careful use of vocabulary helped nursery children develop confidence in communicating and taking part in play with other children. The finding gives parents a concrete picture of learning through interaction: adults’ language helps children express themselves and join in.
Monday afternoon storytelling and singing add a specific shared activity to that picture. Listening to stories and joining songs offer another context for children to hear and use language. The contribution comes from a volunteer governor who spends that afternoon in the nursery, making this a recurring part of its week.
Pendennis has its own nursery team within the school’s Early Years Team. An EYFS lead and an Early Years Support Team also form part of that structure. The nursery therefore sits within an identifiable early years organisation rather than simply being an age group within the wider school.
Relationships shape Pennoweth’s stated approach to care. The school aims for children to feel they belong, with emotional security coming before expectations about responsibility and learning. That is a useful emphasis for families considering their child’s first experience of school.
Support across Pennoweth includes a SEND coordinator and a learning mentor. The school works with families and professionals to understand children’s strengths and needs and arrange support for participation in school life. For a nursery family discussing additional needs, these roles provide clear points of contact within the wider school team.
Members of senior leadership are available on most days for conversations with parents before or after school. Longer meetings can be arranged through the administrators, giving families a route beyond a brief conversation.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate Reception application through Cornwall Council’s coordinated admissions process and meet the deadline for the relevant application year. Treat that application as a separate task from joining Pendennis.
For Reception applications, contact schooladmissions@cornwall.gov.uk or use www.cornwall.gov.uk/admissions for the application process and its deadlines.
