Nursery at Trewirgie Infants' School

Books, conversation and learning to cooperate give Trewirgie’s nursery its character. Reading begins here, with shared books chosen to introduce children to different backgrounds and cultures. Listening and solving problems together matter too: these are skills children start developing in the nursery, rather than expectations saved for later schooling.
The nursery belongs to Trewirgie Infants' School on Trewirgie Road in Redruth. Ofsted graded the school’s early years provision Good at the inspection on 7 and 8 March 2023. That judgement covers early years within the school; it is not a separate nursery rating.
Early Years Foundation Stage learning includes developing relationships, communication and physical skills alongside reading, writing and maths. In the nursery, progress reviews include children’s emotional and social development, language and movement. Observations and children’s recorded work contribute to termly assessments, so progress is considered through what children do as well as what they produce.
Shared reading starts in the nursery. Carefully selected books give children encounters with different cultures, making stories a starting point for understanding other people as well as enjoying language. In March 2023, children across early years were developing their vocabulary through purposeful activities and adult questioning that extended their thinking. Staff used their knowledge of young children’s learning to identify what should come next.
Writing displays showed how children’s work developed, from first marks towards sentences. Early years children also practised sharing, waiting their turn and seeking help. These everyday interactions make independence and cooperation part of learning, alongside the beginnings of literacy.
There is a qualification to the positive early years findings. In March 2023, the school-wide improvement action was to match teaching more closely to pupils’ existing knowledge, because some learning was insufficiently adapted. For families, the relevant issue is how activities build on their own child’s starting point.
A nursery teacher and deputy nursery manager form part of the staffing structure. Wider school support includes a SENDCo and a pastoral lead, giving families routes for discussing learning needs and emotional support.
Support follows a graduated approach: classroom teaching can be supplemented by work in small groups or individual interventions. Individual Provision Maps identify needs, targets and the support planned to address them. Parents help agree and review interventions with teaching staff and the SENDCo, rather than simply receiving an update after decisions have been made.
Emotional development is included in support, alongside academic needs. The school uses a trauma informed approach to behaviour, and children whose developmental needs make the usual expectations difficult can have individual behaviour plans. Parents can discuss concerns or successes with class teachers daily; termly meetings provide another opportunity to talk through progress.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate Reception application through Cornwall local authority’s admissions route and meet the normal deadline.
For children needing additional transition support, plans are tailored individually. They may involve further visits, photograph booklets or extra adult help. Such arrangements support a change of class or phase; they do not secure admission.
