Learning to listen, trying things independently and spending time with older pupils give Ranby’s early years provision its character. The nursery belongs to Ranby CofE Primary School, a Church of England primary school on Blyth Road in Ranby, Retford. The school’s age range begins at three.
The useful distinction for parents is between the nursery and the wider early years provision. Findings from March 2024 describe early years collectively, so they offer a picture of that stage rather than a separate judgement on the nursery alone.
Communication has a clear place in the early years day. In March 2024, staff helped children develop their language and encouraged attentive listening. For a young child, those skills matter beyond a single activity: listening and communicating are part of being able to participate in learning with others.
Early reading provides a concrete example of what children were learning. Children in early years could recognise technical language about letter sounds and combine sounds to read. These findings concern the early years group collectively; they should not be read as an expectation that every nursery child will already be reading.
Learning spaces gave children chances to act independently and persist through difficulties. Planned activities also brought early years children together with older pupils during the day. That gives the provision a connection with the wider school, alongside the learning taking place within early years.
Independent learning. In March 2024, activities children pursued independently sometimes lacked a connection to the intended learning, including early reading and maths. As a result, some opportunities to extend learning were missed. This is a material qualification to the positive picture of communication and independence: opportunities to choose activities also need a clear educational purpose.
In March 2024, children in early years were happy, and adults provided a caring atmosphere alongside support for language development. Care and learning were connected through the encouragement children received to listen and communicate. That is relevant to parents considering how their child will participate in a group.
Contact with older pupils was another part of children’s experience. Early years children enjoyed these planned interactions. The finding supports a picture of younger children taking part in school life, while remaining distinct from any claim about a particular settling-in programme or admission advantage.
Attending Ranby’s nursery does not guarantee a place in its Reception class. Nursery admission and Reception admission are separate processes: families must apply again through the normal Reception application route and meet the applicable deadline. Treat that application as a separate decision and task, even when your child already attends nursery.
In March 2024, early years children were ready for the next stage of their education. Their planned interaction with older pupils belongs to the account of their everyday experience. It does not establish priority for a Reception place.
