At a Glance

Goldilocks porridge, a mud kitchen and structures made from drain pipes give this nursery day its practical character. St Swithun's nursery sits within the academy's early years provision in Retford, with 20 morning places and 20 afternoon places in Foundation 1. Funded childcare arrangements cover three- and four-year-olds.

The early years judgement was Needs attention in January 2026. Caring relationships and plentiful play resources sit alongside significant teaching weaknesses. For parents, the distinction matters: children feel cared for, but the quality of adult interaction and the challenge in learning need attention.

The Nursery Day

The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) combines learning through play with planned teaching. Development Matters and Birth to 5 Matters guide the curriculum here, while story time and children's interests influence activities indoors and outside. Short daily maths sessions use White Rose Maths alongside Birth to 5 Matters, with time to try ideas through play afterwards.

Physical spaces give those ideas somewhere to develop. The water area and large sand pit support exploration of measures; construction and domestic role play bring number and shape into practical activity. Outside, children can work together with planks, crates, tubes and drain pipes, testing structures and changing their designs. Funky fingers activities include threading, scissors and hammering, giving small hand movements purposeful practice.

Tasty Tuesday brings a weekly opportunity to make and explore food. Activities include preparing Goldilocks porridge and designing Cinderella's castle. Story themes extend into science too, with Jack's beanstalks and wheat planting for the Little Red Hen connecting familiar tales with growing things.

In January 2026, songs, stories and sensory activities supported children's talk, and nursery adults encouraged participation through sounds and actions. However, vocabulary teaching varied between staff, leaving some children with less helpful conversation. Opportunities to start writing were too limited, learning often lacked sufficient challenge, and expectations of achievement were too low. Children facing disadvantage, including some with weaker language skills initially, needed more demanding learning and appropriate support. These are substantial considerations alongside the appealing activities.

Care and Support

Relationships provide a positive foundation. In January 2026, early years children were safe and received affectionate care, while staff worked effectively with families. The Head of School also holds responsibility for SEND and early years, connecting these areas of support within the leadership structure.

Speech and language support has specific tools. A screener helps identify needs, Speech and Language Therapists work alongside the setting, and targeted interventions address individual difficulties. For more complex communication needs, Makaton combines speech with signs and symbols. This gives children another way to communicate while language develops.

For children receiving SEN support, parents take part in planning adjustments with the teacher and SENDCo. Termly progress reviews give families a regular opportunity to discuss support and next steps. The school's facilities include an ELSA support base/sensory room; its use should relate to the child's individual needs.

Moving On to Reception

Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must apply separately for Reception through the normal admissions process by the normal deadline. Treat that application as a separate decision from choosing nursery.

The early years curriculum connects learning across the nursery-to-Reception transition. In January 2026, its sequence was appropriate, but teaching needed to provide greater challenge, suitable support for children with lower starting points and clearer progression. For children with SEND, transition programmes are organised around individual needs, with information shared between settings where appropriate. Learning continuity and admission are separate matters.

Practical Information

Foundation 1 has morning and afternoon places. For eligible working families, funding can cover up to 30 hours each week across 38 weeks. Children who do not qualify for that entitlement can use 15 funded hours. An eligibility code must be checked by the provider, and families need to reconfirm their details every three months.

Funding excludes meals, consumables, extra hours and additional activities; providers may charge for these. Refer to the school for current charges. Nursery enquiries can go to the office on 01777 702043 or office@st-swithuns.snmat.org.uk. The academy is on Grove Street, Retford, DN22 6LD.
