Waterproofs, messy play and conversation give Thrumpton’s nursery its character. Children explore through play, with adults helping them put ideas into words and become more independent. This is the nursery at Thrumpton Primary Academy in Retford, welcoming three- and four-year-olds from the term following their third birthday.
Teaching and support staff work with the children. In April 2026, Ofsted judged the school’s early years provision to meet the Expected standard. That judgement covers early years within the school, rather than a separately inspected nursery.
A session moves between small groups with a key worker, activities involving the whole class, tasks guided by adults and play chosen by children. A phonics session concentrates on listening and early language. Children therefore have opportunities both to follow an adult’s lead and to pursue an interest of their own.
The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) combines learning to communicate, move and manage relationships with early literacy, maths, creativity and discovery about the world. Half-termly topics give children ideas to investigate through conversation, experimentation and shared play. Early reading, writing and maths begin in Nursery, with communication receiving particular emphasis.
Indoors and outdoors, children choose their own play. Dedicated outdoor areas support exploration throughout the seasons; waterproof clothing and aprons are provided for messy activities. These practical details let children get involved in hands-on learning. Adults also use role play and discussion to expand children’s vocabulary, modelling ways to explain an idea. In April 2026, early years staff used children’s interests to shape learning and adapted activities to their needs.
Small key worker groups are part of the daily routine. Before joining, families complete an All About Me form alongside other starter information. A close relationship with the pre-school provision on the same site supports communication as children move into Nursery, helping staff understand children before the new stage begins.
Snack brings fruit with a choice of water or milk. Cool Milk registration is also part of the starter arrangements. These are concrete parts of preparing for the nursery day.
In April 2026, early years staff tailored their approaches to individual children, giving attention to welfare and emotional wellbeing. Children were learning to share, take turns and work together. The academy’s SEND support includes communication, learning, emotional development and physical or sensory needs, with specialist advice from outside agencies. Its aims include involving parents in decisions and keeping them informed about progress.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate application through Nottinghamshire County Council’s school admissions process and meet the deadline for their entry year. Treat that application as a separate task, even when your child already attends Nursery.
For the 2026 admissions cycle, the application window closed on 15 January 2026. That date has passed; families applying for a later intake should follow the timetable for that intake.
Part-time and full-time nursery places are offered. Funding provides 15 hours each week for children aged three and four; eligible working parents may qualify for up to 30 hours weekly. Eligibility can be checked through Childcare Choices.
Nursery enquiries go to office@thrumptonprimary-ac.org.uk or 01777 702092, and families can apply online. Before starting, complete the required forms, including the data collection information and, where relevant, the 30 Hours Form.
