Nursery at Ripon Cathedral Church of England Primary School

Gardening, water play and a first taste of Spanish give this nursery its own character within Ripon Cathedral Church of England Primary School. Play and first-hand experiences shape the provision, with learning taking place inside and outside. There is plenty for curious children to investigate.
Children can join from the term following their third birthday, subject to a place being available. The nursery belongs to the school’s Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS). Its Christian character includes links with the Cathedral, religious education and collective worship, so faith forms part of the early years experience.
Construction, baking and gardening bring practical activity into the day. Children can experiment with water, make things and encounter Spanish alongside Forest School activities. These experiences give learning a tangible starting point: something to handle, build or explore, rather than only something to listen to.
The EYFS approach here centres on enquiry, with natural resources and open-ended experiences encouraging imagination. Star Challenges invite children to extend their own learning. The school aims for children to become confident, independent learners who persevere and reflect on what they do. That gives parents a useful picture of the intended balance between exploration and challenge.
In February 2025, children explored both indoor and outdoor learning environments, while adults helped develop their language through modelling and support. Children achieved well across the early years learning areas. The practical implication is that exploration and adult interaction work together: children have opportunities to investigate, with staff helping them develop the language to express their discoveries.
Lunch can fit within the funded nursery session. Families choose between sending a packed lunch and paying for an optional hot school meal; snacks carry no charge. This keeps the lunch arrangement flexible while allowing children to remain in nursery over lunchtime.
Parents supply nappies and any other consumables their child needs. Oscar’s wraparound club has a separate condition: children attending it must be dry and no longer using nappies. That distinction matters when planning care beyond the nursery session.
An online learning journal records daily observations, giving a record of children’s learning. Emotional development also has a place in the early years approach: children are taught to recognise feelings and express them, including understanding the emotions of others.
Attending this nursery does not guarantee a Reception place at Ripon Cathedral School. Families must apply separately for Reception through the normal admissions process and meet the applicable deadline. Choosing the nursery and securing a school place are separate decisions.
Nursery attendance falls within the 8.45am to 3.15pm window, with funded morning and afternoon sessions. Universal funding covers 15 hours per week, while the extended entitlement covers 30 hours. Funding applies during term time and cannot be spread across the calendar year, an important consideration for families arranging year-round childcare.
Sessions beyond a child’s funded entitlement are charged and paid through ParentPay, with invoices issued termly. Ask the school for current charges. Oscar’s is also chargeable and sits outside both universal and extended funded hours; bookings and payments use its online system.
Breakfast club starts at 8am. Staff accompany nursery children to their classroom afterwards and collect them from their classroom for after-school care. Afternoon collection is at 4.30pm or 5.45pm from Oscar’s outside entrance. Anyone collecting who differs from the registered contacts needs advance authorisation.
