Nursery at Brimrod Community Primary School

Morning places shape Brimrod’s nursery offer: 15 hours each week, within the primary school on Holborn Street in Rochdale. Children can join after turning three, subject to a place being available. The nursery has its own teaching team, with a nursery teacher and a support role.
This is school-based provision, so the distinction between nursery experience and the wider school’s inspection position matters. Ofsted’s ungraded inspection on 16 and 17 July 2024 warned that a future graded inspection could produce a lower whole-school judgement.
Rhymes, familiar stories and conversation give the nursery day its clearest character. In July 2024, children enjoyed sharing stories and rhymes, while adults used opportunities throughout their work to build children’s language and communication. For a three-year-old, that means learning begins with listening, talking and enjoying books together.
The emphasis is on developing the language children need for later reading. Stories are therefore more than an activity to fill a morning: they provide a shared starting point for children’s communication. This gives parents a concrete picture of the nursery’s early literacy work.
Early-years children settled quickly and formed friendships in July 2024. That finding gives families a useful indication of how children experienced the move into school life at that time. Parents with questions or concerns can speak directly to their child’s class teacher, providing a clear route for discussing nursery life.
Beyond the nursery team, the school has a Family Support Worker and SENDCo support. Its SEND provision includes sensory circuits, with physical activities adapted to individual needs as part of a broader support plan. These are school-level arrangements; families can discuss additional needs through a meeting arranged with the office.
Safeguarding responsibilities extend to every member of staff. A designated lead and two deputy leads form a team that meets regularly to discuss concerns. For parents, there is an identified route for raising worries about a child’s welfare.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate application to Rochdale Council, which manages Reception admissions. The annual application window opens in September and closes during January, so choosing the nursery does not remove the need to apply again.
Keep that application separate from arrangements for nursery attendance. The school manages nursery entry itself, while the council handles the next admissions step. This distinction matters even when a family hopes their child will remain at Brimrod.
Morning childcare. The nursery currently operates morning placements only, totalling 15 hours a week. Families need a childcare arrangement that works around that pattern.
Collect a nursery application form from the school office. Applications are handled in the order received, and extended term-time leave can put an existing place at risk. The office can be reached on 01706 647146; school visits can also be arranged by appointment there.
School uniform branding is optional. Unbranded clothing can be bought from supermarkets, and the school holds occasional second-hand uniform events. This gives families alternatives to purchasing logo items.
Children must be accompanied to the school door and collected by an adult over 16 whose name is recorded on the collection form. Parents are also asked to keep cars off Holborn Street during drop-off and collection, making the journey to the door a practical consideration.
Children can start as soon as possible after their third birthday, provided a place is available.
