A morning vote for the day's story gives nursery children a small but concrete say in life at Caldershaw. Books feature in the routine, with library visits and the Caldershaw Collection alongside play that children choose themselves and activities guided by adults.
This is Caldershaw Primary School's own nursery class on Edenfield Road in Rochdale. Its character comes from that combination of choice and structure: children explore, while the early years curriculum focuses on language, the beginnings of reading and maths, and social and emotional development.
The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) brings learning and development together through play. Here, children take the lead in some activities and adults guide others. For the youngest children, the emphasis includes building vocabulary and developing the foundations of reading and maths. Learning to relate to others sits alongside those early skills.
Story choice is part of the morning routine. Children vote for the book they want to hear from the Caldershaw Collection, giving them a reason to express a preference and take part in a shared decision. Library visits happen on Monday afternoons; children who do not attend then can go on Wednesday mornings instead. Returning a borrowed book makes way for another choice, so families have a practical part in keeping that routine going.
Beyond the classroom, the school's wildlife trail and pond area serve as outdoor learning spaces for all children and for Forest School. These are concrete features of the wider school environment, rather than an unspecified outdoor area. At home, the Foundation Stage expectation is short daily learning activity lasting 5 to 10 minutes, keeping practice brief.
A class teacher and teaching assistants make up the nursery team. For additional learning needs, there is an EYFS special educational needs coordinator, providing an early years contact for families discussing support.
The school uses Ordinarily Available Provision as its initial approach to SEND support. This includes adjustments to teaching, resources and the sensory or physical environment, together with pastoral support. The emphasis is on changing provision around a child's needs. The Neurodiversity Hub accepts requests for children and young people under 19 who live in Heywood, Middleton or Rochdale. A formal diagnosis is not required, giving eligible families another route when concerns arise.
Communication with home generally uses Schoolcomms for letters; parents can arrange access through the office.
Attending the nursery does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate Reception application through the normal admissions route and meet the deadline for their child's entry year.
Rochdale Council handles the school admissions application route. For September 2026 entry, the application deadline was Thursday 15 January 2026. That cycle is now past; its dates should not be used to plan a later intake.
Morning sessions run from 8:45am to 11:45am, while afternoon sessions run from 12:45pm to 3:45pm. These are distinct three-hour blocks, so the choice affects both collection arrangements and which library visit a child can attend.
