Nursery at Greenbank Primary School

Last reviewed: October 2026 · Inspection data and key information above update regularly, however, this review below is refreshed bi-annually and may not reflect recent changes. Contact the nursery directly to confirm current arrangements. If you spot anything outdated or inaccurate, please let us know.

At a Glance

Apple Class in the morning, Pear Class in the afternoon: Greenbank’s nursery combines short sessions with outdoor learning that reaches beyond the school grounds. Its fieldwork plan names Healey Dell Nature Reserve for nursery children. That gives this provision a specific outdoor character.

For children aged 3 to 4, the nursery belongs to Greenbank Primary School’s Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) unit. A nursery teacher works with teaching assistants, within a unit overseen by the Head of Early Years. Ofsted judged the school’s early years provision Good at the inspection on 28 and 29 September 2022. This is an early years judgement within the school inspection.

The Nursery Day

Play, exploration and familiar routines shape the nursery’s approach. The emphasis is on developing independence and curiosity. For parents, the EYFS focus here takes practical form through language, social confidence and learning to do things for oneself. In September 2022, children in early years were confident, mixed successfully with others and developed independence; adults encouraged attentive listening to stories and extended children’s vocabulary.

Morning activity includes Freddy Fit between 8:45am and 9:00am, with movement set to music. Outdoor learning also includes early years target games using beanbags, combining throwing practice with recognising numbers, shapes and colours. Physical activity has a learning purpose as well as providing movement.

Greenbank’s grounds contain an outdoor classroom and a designated learning area, with a canopy and fire circle supporting its Forest School provision. Den making and wildlife exploration feature in the school’s outdoor activities. The nursery fieldwork destination, Healey Dell Nature Reserve, adds a named place beyond those grounds.

Learning checks. In September 2022, weaknesses in identifying some children’s reading gaps slowed their catch-up. In a few subjects, including within early years, staff were insufficiently clear about the knowledge to teach before introducing further learning. These concerns matter alongside the positive findings about confidence and language.

Care and Support

Arbor handles communication with families, including messages and absence reporting. Parents can update their child’s information there too. The Early Years team also directs families towards Get Ready with Teddy events to support classroom settling, and towards book-sharing advice for 3- and 4-year-olds in more than 20 languages. These provide practical ways to support familiarity and conversation at home.

Children with a full-time nursery place remain for lunch and can bring a packed lunch or have a charged school dinner. Meals are prepared on site in a kitchen and dining room separate from the main building. Food is halal, with a vegetarian choice each day; declared dietary requirements are catered for. Families choose school dinners or packed lunches for a complete half term, and packed lunches must exclude nuts and products containing them.

For additional needs, Greenbank’s support can include visual prompts, individual or small-group interventions and extra adult help. Support is reviewed and adjusted. Parents can raise concerns with the class teacher or SEND team. A Children’s Welfare Officer and Family Support Worker also provide routes to help with wellbeing and family difficulties.

Moving On to Reception

Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate application through the normal school admissions process by the applicable deadline. Greenbank directs school-place applications to Rochdale Council’s online admissions system; families living elsewhere are directed to their own council.

Transition activity is separate from allocation. Move up days on 6 and 7 July 2026 included EYFS, providing a dated example of preparation for a change of class.

Practical Information

Morning nursery runs from 8:45am to 11:45am; the afternoon session runs from 12:15pm to 3:15pm. Full-time places depend on funding approval. For children entitled to 30-hour funding, lunch counts within those hours and collection times vary accordingly. Confirm the agreed collection pattern when arranging the place.

Applications for nursery go through the school office. Enquiries can begin with the administration team on 01706 647923. Greenbank warns that attendance below 80% puts a nursery place at risk because funding may be withdrawn.

Uniform includes a white polo shirt and a green jumper or cardigan, with or without a logo. Nursery children do not need a separate PE kit. For current meal charges, contact the school.
