Outdoor play and topics from China to pirates give Spotland’s nursery its character. Children join from the term following their third birthday, taking either a morning or an afternoon place within Spotland Primary Academy on Edmund Street, Rochdale. This is a part-time nursery arrangement, so the session choice matters for the family’s daily routine.
The academy joined The Harmony Trust on 1 April 2025 and has no Ofsted graded rating yet. An important distinction applies to the earlier provision: in the July 2024 inspection of Spotland Primary School, early years provision was graded Inadequate. That finding belongs to the predecessor school, rather than being a nursery grade for the academy.
Play outside has a clear place in the nursery day. Children spend substantial time outdoors learning through play, and suitable footwear is requested. There is no nursery PE session in the hall: outdoor activity is the practical emphasis for families choosing clothes and shoes.
The topic sequence gives the year identifiable themes. Autumn combines All about me with Toys Past and Present; spring moves to All About China and Growing and Planting. Space and Pirates follow in summer. These give parents concrete starting points for conversations about their child’s learning. Within early years, science comes through Understanding the World, linking scientific learning with children’s questions about what they know and want to discover.
Curriculum quality needs careful consideration. In July 2024, early-years learning at the predecessor school was poorly connected and insufficiently organised, leaving children short of the foundations needed for their next stage. Teaching activities did not build knowledge coherently. Disruptive behaviour also interrupted learning in early years, with inconsistent expectations and routines contributing to the problem. For parents, the important issue is how activities connect and build understanding, alongside the appeal of individual topics.
A nursery teacher works alongside two support staff. The wider school team includes an early-years lead, a SENCo and family support workers, giving families identifiable roles for learning, inclusion and practical support. SEND concerns can be raised through the school office at office@spotland.rochdale.sch.uk.
The July 2024 inspection of the predecessor school found that additional needs were identified too slowly or inaccurately. Staff lacked sufficient training and information to adapt learning for pupils with SEND. Families should discuss how their child’s needs will be recognised and supported.
Medical support includes allergy records, medication arrangements and health care plans developed with families and medical professionals. School meals are cooked on site and are Halal; these are school-wide arrangements rather than a description of meals within each nursery session. Family support also includes referrals and help with food and clothing, which can matter when pressures at home affect a child’s school life.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate Reception application through the normal route and meet the normal deadline. The application route is Rochdale Council’s primary school admissions service. Keep this application separate from choosing or accepting a nursery session.
Transition activities serve a different purpose. Children are offered a visit to their next class before September, and a July Moving Up day lets them spend time in the class they will join. These opportunities help make the next classroom familiar; they do not secure admission.
Morning nursery runs from 8.30am to 11.30am. Afternoon places are also offered, with a finish at 3.15pm. Choose the session around the collection arrangements your family can sustain.
For a nursery application, email office@spotland.rochdale.sch.uk to request a form. Completed applications receive an acknowledgement by email. Informal school visits are encouraged before families decide, providing an opportunity to see the setting before making that choice.
