Play and outdoor learning set the direction at Stambridge's nursery, with a teacher and nursery nurse planning the children's learning together. This is the school's own provision on Stambridge Road in Essex, within its early years organisation. Children can start in the September following their third birthday.
Early years provision received a Good judgement at Ofsted's inspection on 8 and 9 November 2023. That judgement covers the school's early years provision rather than a separately inspected nursery. For parents, the distinctive combination here is play-based learning, classroom support for physical development and a choice between shorter sessions and a day including lunch.
The HEARTS curriculum begins in early years, with Development Matters informing learning across seven areas. In parent terms, learning is organised into connected steps, with personal, social and emotional development receiving particular emphasis. The school aims for children to feel secure and ready to learn, so managing feelings and relationships belongs alongside other learning.
Outdoor learning has a particular emphasis in nursery. Wellington boots, a waterproof coat and spare socks are required because learning outside continues whatever the weather. This is a practical part of the day, rather than something reserved for dry afternoons.
Inside the early years classroom, an area for fine motor development gives children space to practise smaller movements; play equipment supports larger movements too. Food tasting adds another concrete experience to early years topics. Through the HEARTS Promise, children also plant vegetables and grow them, connecting food with practical learning.
There is an important qualification to the curriculum picture. In November 2023, curriculum delivery across the school was inconsistent: some tasks failed to connect with existing knowledge, and explanations sometimes left pupils unsure. The improvement required was closer checking of understanding, vocabulary and skills. This was a school-wide concern, rather than a nursery-only finding.
In November 2023, children in early years adapted quickly to school life and treated one another respectfully. SEND needs were recognised promptly as children entered early years. Support encouraged independence, giving families a useful indication of the approach to helping children participate rather than relying continually on adults.
Visual timetables help children follow classroom routines, while short brain breaks allow a pause. Each classroom also has a reflection space and a worry monster for sharing concerns. These give children concrete ways to communicate feelings.
For children staying through lunch, meals come from Waterman Primary School, with three daily choices selected at morning registration. Early years children receive fresh fruit, and milk can be requested daily; it is free for children under five. Parents receive progress reports and consultation evenings each term, providing regular opportunities to discuss learning and care.
Nursery attendance gives no priority for a full-time school place and does not guarantee Reception admission. Families must make a separate application through Essex County Council. Treat nursery attendance and the later school application as separate decisions.
For September 2026 entry, applications ran from 10 November 2025 to 15 January 2026 through Essex Planning and Admissions. That deadline has passed. Transition support is a separate matter: children have transition days and opportunities to meet their next teacher and engage with their next class or work. Familiarity supports change; it does not alter admission priority.
Morning nursery runs from 8.45am to 11.45am, afternoon nursery from 12.15pm to 3.15pm, and the whole day from 8.45am to 3.15pm includes lunch. Half-day and full-day attendance across the week depend on spaces. Applications go through the school office.
After School Club accepts children aged three to eleven and runs from 3.15pm until 6.00pm on normal school days. Places need reserving through the office, and payment is required in advance. Ask the school for current charges, including nursery lunches.
Nursery uniform combines black leggings or jogging bottoms with a white polo shirt, a royal blue jumper or cardigan, grey or white socks or tights, and plain black school shoes. Bring a named water bottle. Tell the office promptly about collection delays or a change of collecting adult.
Personal school tours can be arranged by calling 01702 544369 or emailing stambridge.office@heartsacademy.uk. Use the visit to discuss how your child would fit into the nursery day.
