Nursery at Atam Academy

Familiar songs, shared stories and a covered outdoor learning area give Atam Academy’s nursery its clearest character: an early start built around language and room to explore. Children join from three years old. The nursery belongs to the primary phase of this Sikh all-through academy in Little Heath, Romford.
Its classrooms sit on the ground floor within a primary wing separate from the secondary school. That gives the youngest children a distinct part of a much larger academy. Ofsted judged the early years provision Good at the inspection on 11 and 12 June 2024; this was an early years judgement within the school inspection, rather than a separate nursery rating.
Language starts with participation. In June 2024, nursery children were building vocabulary by taking part in familiar songs and stories. These give young children words to practise in a recognisable context, making early literacy about listening and joining in.
The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) follows the statutory framework. Its seven learning areas bring together physical development, communication, relationships and emotions, alongside mathematics, literacy, creative expression and understanding the world. For parents, that means learning extends beyond early reading and number work to how children communicate, move and relate to others. The academy places its curriculum within British and Sikh values, including compassion, courage and service.
Classroom clusters are complemented by indoor communal spaces used for smaller teaching groups, work led by pupils and projects. A covered outdoor area supports free-flow learning in the EYFS, giving learning space beyond the classroom.
Curriculum consistency. In June 2024, some aspects of early years planning and delivery remained less developed. Activities did not consistently fulfil the curriculum’s intentions, and checks on understanding did not reliably resolve misconceptions before learning moved forward. Families should weigh that specific concern alongside the early years grade.
Established routines helped early years children settle promptly and work together in June 2024. This is a useful picture of adjustment to nursery life. Staffing includes a nursery teacher and nursery teaching assistants within the primary team.
Across the academy, SEND support includes teaching adaptations, interventions, staff training and resources. The SEND coordinator works with parents, colleagues and external agencies, providing a route for coordinating an individual child’s support.
Parent communication. The June 2024 inspection also identified a school-wide need to strengthen communication and rebuild parental trust following disruption. This concern covered the academy as a whole. A gradual introduction of the Arbor Parent App began in September 2026, with account instructions sent when access is ready and some information continuing through existing systems during the changeover.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate Reception application through the normal admissions process by the applicable deadline. For the 2026-2027 academic year, the application route was E Admissions. Treat choosing the nursery and applying for Reception as separate decisions.
