Nursery at Chadwell Primary School

Learning to take turns, finding the words to explain an idea and trying again when something goes wrong give Chadwell’s early years provision its character. The nursery belongs to Chadwell Primary School on High Road, Chadwell Heath, and offers morning or afternoon sessions funded through the government’s early years entitlement.
Ofsted judged the school’s early years provision Good at its two-day graded inspection on 13 and 14 May 2025. That judgement covers early years within the school; it is not a separate nursery rating. For families, the clearest practical distinction is between the standard 15-hour pattern and a limited allocation of 30-hour places for eligible working parents.
Three-hour sessions give the nursery day a defined shape. Within the school’s early years foundation stage (EYFS), learning includes developing conversation, managing familiar routines and playing alongside other children. In May 2025, adults demonstrated new learning during most activities they led, with attention to children’s speaking and communication. This gives young children examples to follow while they build the language to participate themselves.
Exploration also matters. Children showed confidence in investigating and kept trying when their plans did not work. Established routines helped them become more independent, while shared play involved waiting for a turn and considering other children. These are practical foundations for taking part in a group.
Visible Learning is the school’s named approach across school life, with reflection, creativity and perseverance among its learning dispositions. Its EYFS mathematics approach includes Maths-No Problem!, using objects such as counters before pictures and mathematical symbols where appropriate. The concrete starting point makes an abstract idea something children can handle.
Checking understanding. The May 2025 whole-school improvement action concerned mistakes and misunderstandings that sometimes went uncorrected. This was a school-wide concern, rather than a finding assigned specifically to the nursery, but it matters alongside the positive early years judgement.
For concerns about learning or inclusion, parents start with their child’s teacher, with referral to the SEND coordinator where appropriate. The coordinator can also be reached through the school office or at senco@chadwellprimaryschool.co.uk. This provides a clear route for raising a concern.
The school’s February 2024 SEND arrangements include meeting parents of incoming children with known needs before entry. Families can raise concerns and discuss support before their child starts. Individual Education Plans developed with outreach services are reviewed at least termly, with parents invited to discuss progress and targets.
Wider school support includes Makaton signing, Colourful Semantics and Talk Boost. The school’s SEND information also identifies a sensory room and Rainbow Room among its support spaces. These describe the wider school resources, rather than the nursery’s everyday classroom provision.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate application through Redbridge Council’s school admissions route at the required time. Treat that application as a distinct step when planning your child’s next year.
For children starting Reception in September, the school arranges a meeting for parents and a visit for children before admission. Those activities help families prepare for the change; they do not replace the application process.
Morning sessions run from 8:50am to 11:50am; afternoons run from 12:40pm to 3:40pm. The standard booking is either mornings or afternoons, totalling 15 hours each week. A limited number of 30-hour places are offered to families eligible for the 30 Hours Working Parent Entitlement, so availability matters when matching provision to work commitments.
Begin a nursery enquiry with the school office and complete an enquiry form. Completed applications can be returned to the office or emailed to admissions@chadwellprimaryschool.co.uk. Prospective families can arrange a school visit through the main office. For telephone enquiries, call 020 8590 1242; the office does not take calls between 11am and noon.
