Stories become rockets and caterpillars in F1 Acorns, Broom Valley Community School’s nursery class for three-year-olds. Books provide a starting point for making things and imagining possibilities, giving the provision a recognisable character beyond its morning and afternoon timetable. This is a school nursery with a distinct class identity.
At the Ofsted inspection on 4 and 5 October 2023, early years provision was judged Good within the school’s inspection. That judgement covers the early years provision rather than constituting a separate nursery rating.
Children have opportunities to choose their play alongside learning directed by adults. The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) provides the framework: learning about feelings and relationships, developing movement and language, and exploring numbers, literacy, creativity and the world. For parents, this means play and teaching serve several purposes, from expressing an idea to working with materials.
Communication and language were a central focus in October 2023. After sharing The Colour Monster, children used precise words to explain their feelings. Other early years activities included painting a sunflower in watercolours and persevering with water-filled syringes. These examples connect language, concentration and practical exploration rather than treating them as separate tasks.
Nursery activities in January 2026 included making rockets inspired by Whatever Next and imagining possible adventures. In April 2026, The Very Hungry Caterpillar prompted children to create caterpillars of their own. Stories give children something concrete to discuss and make. Outdoor exploration also featured in January 2026, when F1 children played in snow and explored the cold weather.
F1 Acorns has a class teacher and a Foundation 1 learning support assistant. Within early years, adults helped children establish routines in October 2023. Familiar patterns are part of learning to participate in a session, alongside the activities themselves.
For children with special educational needs or disabilities (SEND), the school’s approach combines classroom teaching with targeted support and adjustments to curriculum planning. The inclusion lead also holds the SEND coordinator role, giving families an identified team role for discussions about additional needs.
Thrive is used across the school to assess social and emotional development in classes and individual children. Those assessments guide the activities adults choose. This makes emotional development an explicit part of the school’s support approach, alongside learning.
Separate application. Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place at Broom Valley. Families must apply separately through Rotherham Council’s admissions process and meet the deadline for their application cycle. Choosing Acorns should therefore be a decision about the nursery experience itself.
Applications can be made online through Rotherham Council, or families can telephone 01709 823777 to request an application form. The nursery enquiry and the Reception application are different tasks: securing a nursery place does not complete the later school application.
Two session patterns run Monday to Friday: mornings from 8:30am to 11:30am, or afternoons from 12:15pm to 3:15pm. These arrival and collection times give families a clear basis for planning the rest of their day.
Children qualify for 15 hours of funded early education in Foundation 1 from the term following their third birthday. Nursery places are arranged directly by the school. Enquiries go to the office on 01709 828636 or office@bvcs.org.uk.
Prospective parents can arrange a school visit by telephone or use the visit form. Seeing the provision is a useful next step before choosing a session.
