Songs, stories and conversation give Flanderwell’s nursery its character. Children practise counting through rhymes, while story-based role play gives them reasons to use new words. Language learning runs through the activities.
Foundation Stage 1 (FS1) is the school’s nursery provision in Flanderwell, Rotherham. From September 2026, its capacity increased from 30 to 56, with children able to start as soon as they turn 3. Ofsted’s June 2026 judgement for early years was Expected standard. That judgement covers the school’s early years provision, rather than a separately graded nursery.
The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) brings learning and care together. Here, Development Matters accompanies a curriculum covering physical skills, communication and emotional and social development, alongside maths, literacy, creative expression and understanding the world. For parents, that means learning extends beyond early reading and number work to how children move, communicate and relate to others.
Sessions combine teaching together, adult-guided work in smaller groups and activities children choose themselves. Children can move between outdoor and indoor learning areas, giving them scope to follow their interests across both spaces. Topics change each half term and are adjusted around children’s interests and needs.
In June 2026, vocabulary was deliberately planned into adult interactions. Stories provided a focus for activities and role play; songs supported counting practice. Early reading and phonics teaching was effective across early years, and both larger movements and fine motor control received attention. Early writing. Letter formation still needed greater consistency. This matters as children begin putting their developing physical skills to work on paper.
Staff assess what children can do when they start and recognise additional needs early. In June 2026, children needing extra help received it from the outset, including focused support with speech and language. Early years children were safe, settled and happy, providing a foundation for taking part in learning.
Relationships with families are a stated priority for the nursery team. The school aims to keep parents informed about progress, news and events, so home and nursery can stay connected. At lunchtime, families can choose a charged school meal or send a packed lunch.
Attending Flanderwell’s nursery does not guarantee a Reception place. Nursery admission and Reception admission are separate: families must apply again through the normal Reception process by its normal deadline. Treat choosing the nursery and securing a school place as two separate decisions.
Morning sessions run from 8.40am to 11.45am. The nursery arrangements introduced for September 2026 give full-day sessions as 8.40am to 3pm. These two options let families choose between a morning and a longer nursery day.
From the term after a child turns 3, the funded entitlement is 15 hours each week. Eligible working parents can claim a further 15 hours. Starting with funded hours immediately after the third birthday requires an eligibility code. Families can also self-fund attendance. Meals are an optional charge, and trip costs are communicated beforehand; contact the school for current charges.
