Mixing paint colours independently gives a concrete glimpse of nursery learning at Herringthorpe Infant School: children begin experimenting with colour independently. This is the school's own nursery, labelled Foundation 1 (F1), in Herringthorpe, Rotherham.
Ofsted judged the school's early years provision Outstanding at its inspection on 17 and 18 June 2025. That judgement covers early years within the school; it is not a separate nursery inspection. Curiosity and personal development feature strongly in the early years findings, giving families a picture of learning that values persistence alongside knowledge.
Songs, stories and rhymes help children develop listening and language skills. In June 2025, these were developing very well across early years. The nursery painting example adds another dimension: choosing and combining colours gives children scope to experiment and work independently.
The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) curriculum brings together learning about the world, early mathematics and literacy, creative expression and physical development. Communication and children's social and emotional development also have their own planning documents. For parents, this means learning extends beyond early reading and counting to movement, conversation and relationships.
Development Matters is the named guidance used to track children's development and decide what comes next. Planning breaks learning into smaller steps and considers developmental stages as well as the term. That gives staff a way to organise the sequence while recognising that children progress at different speeds.
Personal and social development had a strong emphasis in June 2025. Children showed determination when tackling activities, and staff planned experiences across the curriculum's learning areas. The emphasis is on engaging with a task and keeping going, as well as completing it.
Relationships with adults begin in early years, and children learn the daily routines quickly. These June 2025 findings matter for the youngest children: familiarity with adults and routines helps establish the social foundations for taking part in learning.
For children with special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND), the school's support structure has three pathways. Formal support combines classroom learning with additional help; Semi-Formal support blends learning and life skills, with access to other school spaces where appropriate. Informal support uses sensory experiences to develop engagement, communication and independence for children with highly complex needs.
The Hive is the school's enhanced provision used by the Informal pathway. These are school-wide arrangements, rather than a promise of a particular nursery placement. Regular planning, action and review help determine which pathway suits a child's needs.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must apply separately for Reception through the normal admissions process and meet the applicable deadline. Treat choosing the nursery and applying for Reception as two separate decisions.
For nursery enquiries, contact Herringthorpe Infant School on 01709828959. EYFS children are collected at their classroom door, and families should tell staff or the office beforehand if a different person will collect their child.
Childcare beyond the session. The school's after-school wraparound offer is for Foundation 2 through Year 6, while the Junior School breakfast club is for children over five. Neither offer includes Foundation 1 nursery children, so these services should not form part of a nursery childcare plan.
Yes. Herringthorpe Infant School has nursery provision, labelled Foundation 1 (F1).
At the inspection on 17 and 18 June 2025, the school's early years provision was judged Outstanding. This was an early years judgement within the school inspection, not a separate nursery rating.
Songs, rhymes and stories support language and listening. Nursery children also begin mixing paint colours independently.
No. Reception requires a separate application through the normal admissions process by the applicable deadline.
The breakfast club is for children over five, and the after-school wraparound offer starts at Foundation 2. Those eligibility rules do not include Foundation 1 nursery children.
