Learning to persevere, finding words for new ideas and playing alongside other children give High Greave’s nursery its character. This is the nursery provision within High Greave Infant School in East Herringthorpe, Rotherham. The emphasis is on independence as well as learning: adults help children keep trying rather than abandon a task when it becomes difficult.
At the inspection on 8 and 9 July 2025, Ofsted judged the school’s early years provision Outstanding. That judgement covers early years within the school, rather than a separately inspected nursery. The nursery-specific findings describe children settling promptly and beginning to learn the LEARNER values from the outset. For families, those shared expectations make learning to be part of a group part of the nursery experience.
Conversation does real teaching work here. In July 2025, adults used questions carefully and introduced challenging new words, helping children develop their learning quickly. This gives everyday exchanges a purpose beyond getting an answer: children encounter language that extends what they can understand and express.
Play takes place inside and outside, with children getting along together in both environments. The emphasis on playing with others gives them opportunities to practise cooperation alongside their own learning. Adults also encourage persistence. A difficult activity becomes an opportunity to try again, with support, and to develop the confidence to do more independently.
The early years findings connect these elements: relationships, language, play and perseverance work together. For a parent choosing a nursery, that is a useful picture of the educational emphasis. Learning involves both adult interaction and children’s play, with independence developing through the tasks they attempt.
Settling starts before children begin. Staff get to know them ahead of their start, giving adults a basis for building relationships rather than beginning that process only once attendance starts. In July 2025, children settled promptly from nursery entry, and relationships with adults were affectionate and caring. That combination matters for children adjusting to unfamiliar people and routines.
Additional needs are recognised promptly in early years, and suitable help follows. This links identification to action: a child’s needs lead to support, rather than simply being noticed. For families whose child may need extra help, this is a material part of the early years findings.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate Reception application through the normal admissions route and meet the normal deadline. Treat choosing the nursery and applying for Reception as separate decisions; familiarity with the school is not an admission entitlement.
