Colour-mixing potions, homemade ramps and broad beans give Kimberworth’s early years provision a practical character. Children have things to test, grow and talk about. Daycare serves two-year-olds on a part-time basis, while Foundation 1 (F1) is the nursery stage for children aged three and above, with part-time and full-time attendance.
Both sit within Kimberworth Community Primary School in Rotherham. At Ofsted’s inspection on 22 and 23 May 2024, early years provision received a Good judgement within the school’s inspection. That judgement covers early years; it is not a separate nursery rating.
Talking and playing are central to the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) here. In Daycare, adults build language through individual conversations; in F1, small groups practise everyday vocabulary. This gives children opportunities to try out words with an adult before using them with other children.
Beat Baby introduces rhythm in Daycare. F1 children explore rhyme and distinguish sounds, then begin learning letters through Read, Write Inc. Across the Foundation Stage, children become familiar with 30 stories each year through repeated readings linked to their learning. Maths includes spotting patterns and recognising arrangements such as dots on dice, connecting number work with recognisable objects.
The activities make those aims tangible. F1 children have compared ramps by rolling cars down different slopes and pushing them uphill. They have planted broad beans and used story pictures to practise retelling. Threading ribbons and moving pom-poms with tweezers bring concentration and finger control into play. PE takes place on Tuesday mornings and Friday afternoons; a target-throwing activity also involved waiting for a turn.
Daycare uses natural materials for open-ended exploration, with adults modelling play while children make choices. In May 2024, early years children were absorbed in mixing colours to make potions. Language development and planned mathematical activities were strengths, although the inspection also identified inconsistent delivery of the early reading curriculum and called for more precise teaching and closer monitoring.
Adult relationships were a strength in early years in May 2024, with staff supporting children from Daycare onwards. Personal, Social and Emotional Development forms part of Foundation Stage learning, giving care and emotional development a place alongside language and number work.
Food connects with learning too: Daycare children have tasted strawberries alongside The Very Hungry Caterpillar, while F1 children made samosas and dips during learning about Eid with help from a parent. For Daycare and F1 lunches, families can book a charged meal through Arbor or send a packed lunch.
The school’s support structure includes a SENCO and a Behaviour/Inclusion Support Officer, contactable through the school. These provide routes for families to discuss additional needs with the relevant team.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate Reception application through the normal admissions process. Kimberworth’s admissions page directs applications to Rotherham’s school-admissions service. Treat choosing nursery and applying for Reception as separate decisions.
Morning sessions run from 8:40am to 11:40am, and afternoons from 12:20pm to 3:20pm. Full-day timings differ. The opening-times page gives 9am to 3pm, while the fees page lists 8:40am to 3:20pm. Confirm the full-day arrangement when booking.
F1 offers 30 hours of childcare for three- and four-year-olds and directs families to Childcare Choices. Payments go through Arbor before booking. Charges remain payable for missed sessions, including illness and days off outside the holiday entitlement. Written notice of at least four weeks is required to change sessions or end a place, so families need to plan changes ahead. Contact the school for current charges.
