Nursery at Meadow View Primary School

At a Glance

Stories, speech and muddy outdoor exploration give Meadow View’s nursery its character. Rabbit Class is the school’s Foundation 1 provision in Kimberworth, Rotherham, with places for children aged 3 and 4. The emphasis is on finding words, developing relationships and learning through play, rather than rushing into formal reading.

Children join in September, January or April after their third birthday. Part-time and full-time places provide different lengths of day. At the Ofsted inspection on 1 and 2 October 2024, early years provision was graded Good. That judgement covers the school’s early years provision, rather than a separately inspected nursery.

The Nursery Day

Language gives the day a clear focus. The Early Years Foundation Stage covers seven learning areas, with books used to develop communication, vocabulary and understanding. Meadow View calls its approach the Progress Skills Curriculum: teaching with adults, group activities and play chosen by children work together. For parents, that means learning happens through conversation and exploration as well as organised activities.

Nursery phonics begins with listening. Children distinguish sounds, explore rhythm and rhyme, then work towards blending sounds aloud. These are foundations for reading, with attention on what children can hear and say. In October 2024, adults across early years used vocabulary displayed around the learning areas to reinforce new words consistently. Songs and stories helped children remember them; puppets and blocks supported retelling a class story.

Outdoor learning has a regular place in the week. A Forest School Practitioner leads weekly sessions involving tree climbing, bug searches and seasonal exploration, with a fire pit used for marshmallow toasting. Learning takes place indoors too, so outdoor discovery sits alongside classroom play. Planned experiences include a farm visit, meeting a nurse or firefighter, and observing caterpillars becoming butterflies and ducklings hatching. These give children concrete things to discuss. Eid, Christmas and Diwali also feature in the curriculum, connecting learning with different family traditions.

Care and Support

Settling begins before the first nursery session. Every child is offered a home visit and two opportunities to stay and play, with an individual transition programme possible for children with particular needs. This gives families contact with the setting before regular attendance begins. Parent consultations take place termly; learning showcases, meetings and phonics workshops offer further ways to take part.

Support for additional needs sits within the school’s three-stage SEND system. The Inclusion Team meets weekly, and an educational psychologist contributes to provision for pupils with SEND. Targets are discussed with parents and carers. At the most detailed stage, an Extended Support Plan is reviewed each term, linking support to the child’s strengths and needs.

Emotional learning also starts early. My Happy Mind includes children in EYFS, while ROAR rainbow and scaling is used with all children at least twice daily to help them recognise and express feelings. These provide shared language for talking about emotions.

Moving On to Reception

Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate Reception application through Rotherham MBC’s school-place application route and meet the normal application deadline. Treat that application as a separate task from arranging nursery attendance.

For children receiving Stage 1 SEND support, the summer meeting helps pass information to the next teacher. That is preparation for the next year group, rather than an admissions advantage.

Practical Information

The nursery offers 15-hour part-time places and 30-hour full-time places. Morning learning is attended by all children; staying for the afternoon extends the day to 8:45am–3:15pm. Families can discuss personal working patterns with the school.

All children can access 15 hours, while families eligible for 30 hours can use that entitlement here for full-time attendance. Additional sessions outside a 30-hour eligibility code may carry charges; contact the school for current charges. Nursery places are allocated in registration order. To register, call the office on 01709 740500. Visits can also be arranged through the office.
