Forest school and stories stand out in the 11 October 2023 inspection of Rawmarsh Nursery School: outdoor exploration sat alongside carefully planned language learning. The report described the nursery sharing premises with a children’s centre on Barbers Crescent in Rawmarsh, Rotherham. Its current recorded age range is two to five.
Qualified Early Years Teachers work alongside early childhood educators. This is provision built around young children’s development, with play providing the route into learning. The October 2023 inspection found that children developed independence and received support tailored to their starting points.
The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) Development Matters framework guides planning across seven learning areas, with experiences both outside and indoors. For parents, the practical emphasis is learning through exploration and play rather than treating learning as a separate part of the day.
The 11 October 2023 inspection found a clear emphasis on language during play. Stories, songs and rhymes recurred so that children could practise vocabulary and become familiar with it. Adults joined children’s activities, demonstrating words and returning to them. One example involved a zoo story: children learnt animal names and descriptive words, connecting the story to language they could use themselves.
Inspectors on 11 October 2023 found learning organised into manageable stages, with staff checking children’s understanding to identify where extra help was needed. Adults judged when to offer guidance and when to give children room to try. Children persisted with unfamiliar activities.
The on-site forest school gave outdoor learning a concrete focus in the 11 October 2023 inspection. Children used the grounds regularly, and stories extended beyond indoor activities. The report named visitors including Guide Dogs for the Blind, The Salvation Army and the fire and rescue service, bringing people and experiences from beyond the nursery into its curriculum.
The 11 October 2023 inspection described established routines and simple rules that helped children understand the day. Adults encouraged them to attempt tasks independently and supported them in handling their emotions. Children cooperated with one another and showed exemplary behaviour; safeguarding arrangements were effective.
In that inspection, support for children with special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND) combined early recognition of needs with specific targets. Links with other agencies helped staff address development and learning needs, while regular communication kept parents involved in the support their child received.
Inspectors also found that parents were treated as partners in their children’s learning. Staff listened to families and offered guidance, helping parents support their children.
Attending Rawmarsh Nursery School does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must apply separately for Reception through the normal admissions process. Keep that application distinct from choosing a nursery place: support for children’s development and an entitlement to a school place are separate questions.
