Sacred Heart’s own nursery provision sits within a Catholic primary school on Lockwood Road in Goldthorpe.
The Foundation Stage outdoor area connects to classrooms through external doors. This provides a physical link between the teaching spaces and the outdoor area, alongside accessible classroom entrances.
For concerns about special educational needs and disabilities (SEND), the class teacher is the first contact. The federation’s process involves parents in decisions about additional help, with progress reviewed regularly. A meeting can address concerns, agree support and its review timescale, and consider referrals to other professionals. That gives families a defined route for discussing their child’s needs.
Responsibility is shared between the teacher and the special educational needs coordinator (SENCO). Teachers monitor progress and plan additional help; the SENCO coordinates provision and liaises with professionals such as speech and language therapists. Support can involve an individual child or a small group, depending on need.
Parents of children with SEND are invited to three reviews during each academic year, alongside parents’ evenings. These meetings review targets in the child’s support plan. Within Sacred Heart’s Foundation Stage setting, an accessible toilet includes a changing station, a practical feature for children who need help with personal care.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate application through the normal admissions process and meet the applicable deadline. The federation’s Barnsley admissions guidance identifies the Barnsley Council Parent Portal as an online application route. Treat this application as a separate task from arranging nursery attendance.
For children with SEND moving between classes, transition support includes staff sharing information and opportunities to meet the next teacher and see the new classroom. Where appropriate, extra preparation can include a photo book used at home and school. This helps make change more familiar; it does not establish an admissions advantage.
Visits can be arranged by calling 01709 892385 or emailing sacredheart@federationcc.org.uk. A Parent Support Advisor can also help families with the admissions process, including the online form. This offers a direct point of contact for arranging a visit and getting application help.
