Nursery at Sitwell Nursery & Infant School

Daisy Class gives Sitwell’s youngest children their own starting point within the school. This is Foundation 1, the nursery provision at Sitwell Nursery & Infant School on Grange Road in Rotherham. Children normally join from the term following their third birthday, with either a 15-hour or 30-hour place, subject to the relevant eligibility checks.
Play and growing independence shape the provision. Children choose learning activities for themselves, alongside time working with adults and other children.
Sessions combine activities chosen by children with small groups led by adults. That gives children opportunities both to pursue an interest and to practise sharing an activity with others. Planning draws on Development Matters and the school’s progression skills curriculum, linking play to the skills children are developing. Outdoor areas are part of the learning environment too.
The Early Years Foundation Stage, or EYFS, brings together learning about language, relationships and movement with early reading, number, creativity and understanding the world.
At the inspection on 13 and 14 May 2025, Ofsted graded the school’s early years provision Good, highlighting purposeful learning, adult interaction that develops language, and activities suited to children’s development. That judgement covers early years across the school. The same inspection required more consistent use of teaching strategies in some subjects across the school; this was a school-wide concern, rather than a finding specifically assigned to nursery.
A team of qualified practitioners supports nursery learning. For children joining from another setting in September, the school’s transition arrangements include three visits before starting, with extra visits for those needing more help to settle. This gives families a staged introduction rather than relying entirely on the first session.
Lunch has a clear choice: nursery children can bring food from home or have a cooked school meal for an additional charge, ordered through the school’s online system after enrolment. Packed lunches must exclude nuts because of serious allergies within the school community. Children bring their own water bottle, and those under five are entitled to milk each day without charge.
Support for additional needs involves the class teacher, teaching assistants and SENDCo. The Spring 2026 SEND policy provides for individual targets, consultation with parents and specialist advice where needed. Speech and language programmes and physiotherapy are among the possible interventions. At school level, accessible toilet facilities include a hoist and changing bed, useful practical provision for children needing help with personal care.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate application through the normal admissions process. For Rotherham residents seeking September 2027 entry, that means applying through Rotherham Council’s coordinated scheme by 15 January 2027.
The 2027/28 arrangements give no priority for attending the nursery. Places follow the council’s admission criteria, so familiarity with Sitwell must be kept separate from entitlement to a place.
Transition support serves a different purpose. For children moving between classes, the school describes advance information sharing and at least two visits to the new classroom near the end of the school year. Individual education plans are passed to the next teacher, helping support continue across the change.
The nursery application form offers mornings from 8:45am to 11:45am or full days from 8:45am to 3:15pm. It explicitly excludes afternoon-only sessions. The application form lists an 8:45am start, while the 2026 nursery prospectus says the morning session begins at 8:40am. Confirm the current start time with the school office.
Funding arrangements are term time only. The school directs families to eligibility checks for funded hours and also offers sessions paid for by families; contact the office for current charges. Cooked nursery lunches are charged separately. Breakfast Club begins at 7:45am, while Tea Club extends care until 5:45pm, with activities and snacks.
Enquiries and visits go through the school office on 01709 531855 or office@sitwellinfantschool.co.uk. Return the nursery application form to the office to join the waiting list. Uniform includes a sweatshirt or cardigan, and families can use the school’s pre-loved uniform rail. Early years children use their classroom door for drop-off and collection; tell staff in advance if someone different will collect your child.
