Books go home from the start of nursery at St Bede's, giving shared reading a place in family life from the beginning. The nursery belongs to St Bede's Catholic Primary School in Kimberworth, Rotherham, within a Catholic school community whose promises centre on honesty, care, faith, perseverance and respect.
At the inspection on 15 and 16 October 2024, Ofsted judged early years provision Good. That judgement covers the school's early years provision rather than a separately inspected nursery.
Story times and rhymes are specific features of F1 learning. Sharing books, talking and listening are used to develop children's understanding and vocabulary: the emphasis is on giving young children language they can use, alongside stories they can enjoy. This makes the nursery's early reading approach something parents can join in with, rather than an activity confined to the classroom.
A library book chosen by the child goes home to be shared with an adult. That choice gives families a concrete starting point for conversation about stories and lets children bring their own interests into reading together. The school aims to build enjoyment of books from these early experiences.
The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) also includes exploration indoors and outside. In October 2024, children enjoyed investigating natural materials in both spaces, and their vocabulary developed rapidly with staff support. Early years children made good progress relative to where they began. For parents, the combination of exploration and language development is the clearest picture of learning here.
Settling was a positive feature of early years in October 2024: children adjusted well to the setting. This matters alongside the learning activities, because becoming comfortable in the classroom is part of starting nursery.
Across the school, teachers work with a Learning mentor on emotional, social and mental health difficulties, including support around bereavement. Parents and carers are involved, and curriculum or timetable adjustments are used to respond to individual needs. These are school-wide arrangements, rather than a separate nursery support service.
SEND progress checks. In October 2024, the school needed to improve how it assessed progress for some pupils with special educational needs and/or disabilities. Small, measurable targets were needed. For families whose child needs additional support, how progress is tracked deserves attention alongside the support itself.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate application through the normal school admissions process. For September 2027 entry, the application deadline is 15 January 2027, with Rotherham Council providing the admissions route. Families living outside Rotherham should contact their own local Admissions Team.
The application process also involves supplementary documentation for a Catholic school place. Submit the required forms and supporting documents before the deadline. Treat this application as a separate family task, even while your child is already attending nursery.
The school office can be contacted on 01709 740 101 or at enquiries@stbedescatholicprimary.co.uk. The address is Wortley Road, Kimberworth, Rotherham, S61 1PD. Contact with the school's special educational needs coordinator is also through the office, giving families a direct route for discussing additional needs.
