Stories, songs and an outdoor reading space give Thrybergh’s nursery its character. Foundation Stage 1 caters for children aged three and four within the school’s F1/F2 setting on Oldgate Lane in Rotherham. A teacher and teaching assistants support the Foundation Unit, placing nursery children within the school’s early years provision.
Ofsted judged early years provision Good at the September 2023 inspection. Children were confident and enjoyed their time in early years, while adults’ conversations helped them develop their language. Outdoor learning had a specific weakness, which matters alongside that positive judgement.
Morning nursery runs from 8.45am to 11.45am; the afternoon session lasts from 12.15pm to 3.15pm. Learning combines activities directed by adults with play that children choose for themselves, indoors and outside. That gives children opportunities to follow an interest as well as work towards their next learning steps.
The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) brings together learning to communicate, manage feelings and relationships, and develop physical skills. Alongside those foundations, children explore maths, literacy, the world and creative expression. Stories, rhymes and songs introduce words and numbers. Half-term topics have related focus books, giving shared reading a connection with the wider learning.
Little Wandle Letters and Sounds Revised provides daily phonics from Foundation Stage 1. Children begin building knowledge of sounds and letters through consistent teaching routines. Parent workshops explain the approach, helping families support this learning at home.
Children use classroom and outdoor learning areas, including an outdoor reading space with cosy corners. Foundation activities include painting, matching numbers and practising cutting, bringing together creative work, early maths and hand control.
In September 2023, adults used questions and vocabulary to extend children’s communication successfully. However, some outdoor activities did not target the intended learning closely enough, limiting what some children gained from them. Outdoor learning. This was an early years improvement action. Families should weigh the outdoor space alongside the purpose of the activities taking place there.
Class Dojo enables staff to share photographs of Foundation learning with families, giving parents a way to talk about those experiences at home. School dinners are available for FS1 children and carry a charge.
For children with special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND), the school’s support structure brings together class teachers, teaching assistants and the SEND coordinator. Concerns are discussed with parents, support is planned around short-term targets, and those targets are updated every three weeks. Speech and Language Therapy and Educational Psychology are among the services the team works with. This gives families a route from an initial concern to planned support and specialist advice where needed.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Parents must make a separate application through their home local authority, using the normal admissions process by 15 January. Rotherham residents apply through Rotherham’s admissions service.
For the 2026/27 Reception entry cycle, nursery attendance conferred no oversubscription priority. Allocation depended on other criteria, including care status, catchment, siblings and distance. Choosing the nursery and securing Reception admission are separate decisions.
The school’s general transition routine includes short visits to a new classroom and teacher, followed by a full day before the summer holidays. Children who may find the change difficult can have additional visits. Familiarisation supports the move between classes; it does not change admission rights.
The two nursery sessions each last three hours. An optional additional charge applies to a 30 hour child staying all week. Contact the school for current charges, including school dinners, on 01709 850732 or office@thryberghprimary.org.
The Lime Trees provides breakfast and after-school childcare on the school site for Foundation Stage children through to Year 6. Families register their children and book online, selecting Thrybergh Primary School as the location. This is a separate booking route for families arranging care around the nursery session.
