At a Glance

Stories, conversation and time outdoors give Acorns, the nursery at Treeton Church of England Primary School, its character. Children take part in adult-directed learning and make choices about their own play, with both a classroom and an outdoor area in use. Morning, afternoon and full-day sessions offer different ways to fit that experience into family life.

Ofsted rated the school's early years provision Good at its inspection on 13 and 14 January 2022. That judgement covers early years within the school, rather than a separate nursery inspection.

The Nursery Day

Stories provide the starting point for EYFS topics, with vocabulary a deliberate focus. EYFS means the early years foundation stage: here, the practical pattern combines sessions led by adults for the class, work in smaller groups and learning that children initiate themselves. Children therefore have time both to follow teaching and to pursue their own interests indoors and outside.

Conversation is part of the learning. In January 2022, staff helped children extend their language by demonstrating conversation as they played. Regular training supported a curriculum in which learning followed a considered sequence. For parents, the useful distinction is that play has a learning purpose, with adults helping children find words to express themselves.

Early geography begins close to home. Children learn about the school's layout and their nearby surroundings as an introduction to maps. Progress is checked by watching children play and learn; Development Matters guides those observations. This allows staff to plan what comes next from what a child can already do.

Care and Support

Parents can arrange a conversation with the class teacher through Class Dojo, or telephone the office for an urgent matter. Staff duties mean a discussion before the day begins may need an appointment. This gives families a route to raise concerns while allowing staff to concentrate on supervising children.

Additional needs are supported through the school's Graduated Approach. Teachers discuss concerns with the SENDCo and consult parents when deciding whether different or extra provision is needed. Support is assessed, planned, put into practice and reviewed, so it can change as a child's needs change. Every child on the SEND register has a SHINE Power Pack containing activities linked to their individual targets.

School meals are catered by The Pantry, and a morning session including lunch is an option. Safeguarding concerns can be raised with staff; the office can locate a designated safeguarding lead for a confidential, urgent conversation. The school also helps families make Early Help referrals, giving parents a route into wider family support.

Moving On to Reception

Separate applications. Attending the nursery does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must apply again through the normal Reception admissions process and meet the normal deadline. Treat choosing a nursery session and applying for a school place as two separate decisions.

Practical Information

Morning sessions run from 8.45am to 11.45am; afternoons run from 12.15pm to 3.15pm. A full day runs from 8.45am to 3.15pm. The morning-with-lunch option has a 12.15pm collection, giving families another session length to consider.

Collection arrangements depend on the finishing time. At 11.45am and 12.15pm, two staff accompany nursery children to the allotment gate, releasing each child only when their named adult is there. At 3.15pm, children leave individually through the classroom door. Tell the class teacher if a different adult will collect your child, and contact the school if you are delayed.

For enquiries, contact the school office on 0114 2692677. The school is on Wood Lane in Treeton, Rotherham.
