At a Glance

Acorns is the nursery class at Wath Central: Foundation Stage 1 within the primary school, with a choice between morning, afternoon and longer attendance patterns. That makes the weekly timetable a practical part of choosing this nursery. Families can use shorter sessions or a funded pattern combining full days with one shorter session.

The early years provision received a Good judgement at the Ofsted inspection on 4 and 5 May 2022. This covered the school's early years, rather than a separately graded nursery. Children enjoyed their nursery classes, but the findings also raised concerns about how consistently planned learning became useful activity.

The Nursery Day

Three-hour sessions give the day its basic shape. Mornings run from 8:30am to 11:30am; afternoons start at 12:15pm and finish at 3:15pm. Full days run from 8:30am to 3:15pm, so families choosing longer attendance need to plan for lunch as well as the session itself.

The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) sets the framework for learning and care. In parent language, it covers developing communication, movement and relationships alongside early literacy, maths, creativity and understanding the world. These are connected areas of development, rather than simply preparation for formal lessons.

In May 2022, planned early years activities captured children's interest, but adults did not consistently turn them into the learning intended. Some made too little use of the surroundings, losing chances to develop language and extend understanding. In some subjects, curriculum planning also needed clearer detail about the knowledge children should acquire from the early years onwards. Learning in practice. These findings make the interaction between adults, activities and children an important focus when visiting.

Care and Support

Relationships were a strength in May 2022: early years staff showed care and built positive connections with families. The school team includes an EYFS lead whose responsibilities also cover parent liaison and oracy, alongside a SEND coordinator and inclusion lead. This gives families identifiable roles for discussing development and support.

For concerns about special educational needs or disabilities, the child's class teacher is the first contact. Support follows a graduated response, beginning with simpler interventions and increasing help when needed. Across the school, Explore supports children developing readiness for formal learning; Discover suits those accessing some subject learning; Connect serves formal learners. These pathways allow discussion to centre on a child's learning needs.

Food requires a little preparation. Nursery children staying for lunch bring a packed lunch; school dinners are not currently offered to F1 children. Foundation Stage children receive free milk and a daily choice of fruit or vegetables. Water is available, and families should provide a named plastic drinks container with a lid.

Moving On to Reception

Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate application through Rotherham Local Authority's normal school admissions route and meet the applicable deadline. Treat that application as a separate task, even when your child already attends Acorns.

For children receiving SEND support, the trust requires support plans to be checked and amended in time before a change of educational phase. That concerns preparation for the next stage; it does not secure admission.

Practical Information

Both 15-hour and 30-hour funded places are offered. The 15-hour options run Monday to Friday, either mornings or afternoons. The 30-hour pattern comprises four full days plus a three-hour morning or afternoon on the fifth day. Five full days can be arranged with a paid top-up where availability permits; additional purchased hours also depend on space. Ask the school for current charges.

Drop-off and collection use the Foundation Stage 1 Unit Entrance. Nursery applications use an online form, followed by a waiting list; offers follow application order and depend on availability. To arrange a visit, call 01709 760345. General enquiries can also go to school@wcp.jmat.org.uk, with the office reachable from 8:15am to 3:45pm.
