Rhymes and songs give this nursery its clearest character: children build a repertoire that prepares them for later learning. Wath Church of England Primary School has nursery provision. The school takes children from age three, on Barnsley Road in Wath-upon-Dearne. Nursery registration is handled directly by the school.
Learning through songs and rhymes is a concrete part of the Nursery class’s work. In April 2025, children were developing their knowledge of both as preparation for the learning ahead. This gives families a specific picture of early language work: children build knowledge of rhymes and songs in preparation for later learning.
Routine matters alongside that learning. In April 2025, early-years children settled successfully, with staff helping them get used to school routines promptly. Becoming familiar with how school works is part of the early-years experience here.
For a child needing additional help, support starts with the class teacher. The school aims to identify needs early and involves parents when a teacher thinks an intervention would help. Possible support includes a learning mentor, the parent support worker, teaching assistants and the speech and language team. These are different routes for responding to a child’s needs, rather than a single standard intervention.
Teachers adapt their planning to pupils’ needs. The school’s approach repeatedly assesses needs, plans support, puts it into practice and reviews the response, becoming more individual as staff understand a child’s difficulties. Parents can raise concerns with staff themselves; they do not have to wait for the teacher to initiate that conversation.
Safeguarding responsibilities sit with a designated lead and deputy leads, including a family support role. A member of that safeguarding team is on site throughout school hours and while school clubs run, giving families an identified team to approach with concerns.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place and does not confer priority under the school’s admission criteria. Families apply separately through the council for Foundation 2, or F2, following the normal Reception application route and deadline.
When applications exceed places, the criteria consider siblings attending the school, supported applications from practising All Saints Church families, residence within Wath parish, supported applications from practising members of another Christian church, and distance from school. Nursery attendance is separate from those considerations.
There are meetings for children and parents before the move into Foundation 2. These support preparation for the change; they do not alter the admissions decision.
To register for F1, contact the school office on 01709 760471 or email school@wce.jmat.org.uk. Families can arrange a school tour, including the Foundation Unit, by making an appointment through the office. That provides a direct introduction to the school before registration.
The school office also provides access to second-hand uniform. Clothing and footwear should carry the child’s name so misplaced items can be identified. Individual uniform adjustments can be considered for children with SEND or sensory difficulties.
Contact the school directly to register for F1. The office telephone number is 01709 760471.
