Sunbeams afternoons for two-year-olds and Sunstone mornings for three- and four-year-olds give this nursery a clear practical shape. Both provisions sit on the Wath Victoria Primary School site in Wath-upon-Dearne. For older nursery children, a 30-hour place may also be available, subject to availability.
Care and learning need separate consideration here. The Ofsted report published in March 2026 graded early years Needs attention, while finding the provision for two-year-olds suitable and helping children feel secure and settled. That distinction matters: reassurance about children's care sits alongside substantial concerns about how their learning builds.
The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) curriculum covers children's learning across its different areas, including language, early mathematics and personal, social and emotional development. Stories are enjoyed, and adults introduce new words and encourage conversation. These are useful foundations for children learning to express themselves and join in with others.
In March 2026, however, the learning sequence needed greater precision. Staff did not consistently have sufficiently clear steps to guide what each child should learn next. Conversation and vocabulary teaching also varied between adults, limiting children's progress. Leaders had begun training to improve these exchanges. Changes in staffing and leadership had also delayed early years improvement, although leaders had a clear plan for strengthening practice. For parents, the key issue is how everyday talk and activities become purposeful teaching matched to their child's next step.
An outdoor learning area forms part of the early years environment. Changes to that space, early mathematics and early reading were beginning to have a positive effect in March 2026. These were encouraging beginnings rather than evidence of consistently secure learning. The priorities remained clearer curriculum steps and more consistent teaching interactions.
Children in early years settled into the provision, with warm relationships between adults and children evident in March 2026. Staff helped children develop socially and emotionally. Everyday habits needed further work, though: sharing turns and looking after resources were still developing. Families should weigh that combination of attentive care and routines that need greater consistency.
For additional needs, the school uses a graduated process of assessment, planning, support and review. Teachers contact parents when they believe an intervention could help their child. Support can involve the class teacher, teaching assistant or speech and language team, giving families a route into discussion about their child's needs.
Children attending across lunchtime can bring food from home or have a school dinner, which carries a separate charge. The school is nut-free, a practical consideration when packing food.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate application through the normal school admissions process, via Rotherham Local Authority, and meet the applicable deadline. Treat the nursery choice and the Reception application as two separate decisions.
The 15-hour funded Sunbeams pattern runs Monday to Friday, noon to 3pm. Sunstone's 15-hour morning pattern runs from 8.30am to 11.30am; 30-hour places run Monday to Friday, 8.30am to 3pm, subject to availability. Additional sessions may be possible and carry an extra charge. Contact the school for current charges.
