Nursery at Brickhouse Primary School

At a Glance

Structured play, daily phonics and songs with instruments give Brickhouse’s nursery its character. This is the school’s own provision on Dudhill Road in Rowley Regis, with nursery and Reception grouped within the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS). Learning combines adult teaching with activities children choose for themselves. Both have a place.

Ofsted graded early years provision Good at the January 2023 inspection. That judgement covers the school’s early years provision, rather than a separately inspected nursery.

The Nursery Day

Topics connect the learning: nursery follows three themes across the year, one each term. Within those topics, the EYFS covers children’s communication, movement and social development alongside early literacy, maths, creative expression and understanding their surroundings. For parents, this means the programme reaches beyond letters and numbers to how children speak, play and manage relationships.

Children receive direct teaching and also choose from planned play activities. Children therefore have opportunities to follow an activity independently as well as learn directly from staff. The early years team plans across the different areas of development, giving the play a teaching purpose.

Phonics has a defined place in that programme. Sessions last 20–30 minutes daily, using Supersonic Phonics Friends. Nursery works on Phase 1 through SALLEY throughout the year, with Phase 2 introduced in summer. Children are grouped by ability in early years, so the teaching can respond to their learning stage.

Music adds another kind of participation. Early years children sing songs built around repeated phrases, join the weekly Singing Assembly and use instruments to practise a steady beat. They also describe the sounds instruments make and perform at Christmas events. Listening, speaking and making music meet in the same activities.

Care and Support

Support for additional needs involves the class teacher and SENCO. Specialist teaching referrals follow discussion with parents, making family involvement part of the process rather than an afterthought. Parents can contact the SEND team at sen@brickhouse.sandwell.sch.uk.

The 2022–23 Local Offer describes discussions about a child’s needs before they start. This provides a useful starting point for families bringing concerns about learning, behaviour or medical needs into nursery.

More detailed nursery assessment arrangements appear in the school’s 2020–21 SEND Information Report: entrants were screened with WELLCOMM and assessed against Development Matters. That document also described the purpose-built Success Centre for small-group or individual interventions. These are dated descriptions of how additional support was organised, rather than promises about a particular child’s provision today.

Moving On to Reception

Attending nursery does not guarantee a Reception place. Parents must make a separate application through Sandwell’s Admissions and Appeals Service, following the normal application timetable. The school directs enquiries about September Reception entry to Annual_schooladmissions@sandwell.gov.uk.

For the 2025–26 admissions cycle, the determined arrangements gave no priority for nursery attendance. The sibling criterion explicitly excluded nursery siblings. Families should therefore keep nursery attendance and the Reception application as separate decisions.

Transition support is a different question. The 2020–21 SEND Information Report described consultation with families and professionals, plus supported visits for a child and parent when moving between phases. Its purpose was preparation for change, not an admissions advantage.

Practical Information

Nursery starts at 8.50am, and the school timetable gives 15 hours of nursery provision per week. That weekly commitment matters when fitting nursery around family routines.

After 8.55am, nursery children are marked late and enter through the main front doors. If a child is absent, parents should telephone with the child’s name, class and reason, helping staff account for their whereabouts.

For nursery enquiries, contact the school on 0121 559 1629. Brickhouse’s address is Dudhill Road, Rowley Regis, B65 8HS.
