At a Glance

Play, conversation and growing independence give Ducklings its character. This is St Lawrence Church of England Primary School’s nursery in Wymington, welcoming children from the term following their third birthday and operating within the school’s registration. Families can choose part-time or full-time attendance.

The April 2026 Ofsted judgement for early years was Expected standard. Teaching across the early years follows a connected curriculum, and children gain confidence in managing equipment, caring for their classroom and persisting when play becomes challenging. Those are useful foundations for school life.

The Nursery Day

Structured play shapes the learning. The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) brings together language, relationships and physical development with early reading, number, creativity and understanding the world. In parent terms, talking, moving, making and exploring all count as learning here.

Inside, children can explore imaginative play, make art, handle messy materials and choose books. Drawing and other mark-making sit alongside activities for small-hand coordination and early mathematics. The large outdoor area is used in wet weather as well as sunshine, extending exploration beyond the classroom. A waterproof coat and named wellington boots have a practical purpose.

Books have a place beyond the session: library books can be exchanged on any day, while Thursday mornings include Show and Tell, with themes displayed in the nursery window. These give families concrete ways to join in with their child’s interests.

In April 2026, early-years play included pretending to be dragons, riding tricycles and caring for dwarf beans. Conversations with staff helped children expand their vocabulary and become more confident speakers. Writing remained an area for further work: the improvement action included helping early-years children use writing skills more confidently, with attention to grammar, spelling and composition. Families should weigh that alongside the positive findings about independence and spoken language.

Care and Support

An Early Years Lead and two key workers form the named nursery team structure. For questions about a child’s education, the class teacher is the first contact. A December 2021 nursery update described home visits before the January restart, an example of families meeting staff before a new term.

Lunch is part of the afternoon session. Children staying then, or attending lunch club after a morning session, need either a packed lunch or a school meal. Kingswood Catering supplies meals, which families order directly through its website at least a week beforehand. Meals are charged unless the family qualifies for income-related Free School Meals. This needs a little advance planning.

The school’s SEND arrangements include adapting activities, working in small groups and providing adult support. Parents are informed when a child joins the SEN register, and Additional Support Plans describe provision for children needing targeted help. Speech and Language Therapists are among the outside professionals whose advice may be sought. This gives families a defined route for discussing additional needs.

Moving On to Reception

Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate application through their home local authority: Bedford Borough residents apply to Bedford Borough Council, while families elsewhere use their own council. For the September 2026 intake, the application deadline was 15 January 2026; that cycle has passed.

Familiarity is built through transition activities. During the summer term, nursery children visit the Reception classroom for stories and learning alongside its current children. These visits help children become familiar with the Reception classroom. They are transition support, separate from the admissions decision.

Practical Information

Morning sessions run from 8:50am to 11:50am; afternoons run from 11:50am to 3pm and include lunch. The 15-hour funded pattern can be five mornings, five afternoons or two and a half full days. Children eligible for 30 funded hours can attend five full days, from 8:50am to 3pm. Families using 15 funded hours can book paid additional sessions through the office, subject to space.

Nursery children can also use breakfast and after-school clubs. Breakfast club starts at 7:30am. Lunch club is a charged extension for morning-only attendance; contact the school for current charges.

Uniform combines grey trousers, a skirt or pinafore with a pale blue polo shirt and royal blue sweatshirt; logos are optional on the tops. Pack spare clothes and a named water bottle. Nursery applications go directly to the school on its own form. For enquiries, contact the office on 01933 353 530 or admin@st-lawrenceschool.co.uk.
