Stories, singing and learning to listen give this nursery its character. At St Joseph's Catholic Primary School on Marlborough Road in Sale, nursery children begin their education within a Catholic primary school, with a maximum of 26 children in each session. Entry is in the September following a child's third birthday.
Ofsted judged the school's early years provision Outstanding at the inspection on 7 and 8 May 2025. That judgement covers early years within the school; it is not a separate nursery rating.
Play has a clear learning purpose here. The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) combines communication, physical development and learning about relationships and emotions with early maths, literacy, creative expression and understanding the world. For parents, that means the nursery day addresses how children talk, move and get along as well as what they know.
Children alternate between activities directed by adults and learning they initiate themselves. Teachers organise opportunities around themes and topics, planning for both the classroom and outdoor learning spaces. Observation informs the next steps for each child, with the intention of supporting progress at their own pace. Children therefore have room to make choices alongside planned teaching.
Listening comes before formal reading. Nursery phonics includes recognising everyday sounds, exploring sounds made by instruments and the body, and playing with rhyme and voices. Children also practise oral blending, joining spoken sounds together. These activities prepare them for Essential Letters and Sounds (ELS). In May 2025, nursery children participated enthusiastically in songs and stories, while cooperation was a strength across early years. Books continue at home: every child takes home a Reading Spine book each week, which can be enjoyed through an adult reading aloud or shared reading.
Individual development guides the teaching approach: teachers observe children and use what they see to plan further learning. Half-termly nursery curriculum updates give parents an overview of the learning, helping families connect conversations at home with activities in nursery.
For additional needs, the school's SEND provision includes speech and language support, pastoral interventions and adjustments to teaching. Visual timetables and extra time to process information are among its adaptations. These are school-wide arrangements; parents can discuss their child's needs with the SEND coordination team at sendco@stjosephstrafford.co.uk. Wheelchair access and accessible toilets are physical features of the school.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place and does not confer priority under the current oversubscription criteria. Families must make a separate application through Trafford's online process and complete the school's supplementary form. Choosing nursery should therefore be a decision about the nursery experience itself.
The admission priorities distinguish Catholic applicants, parish residence and looked-after status, with sibling attendance and distance used within categories. For the past 2026 admissions cycle, the supplementary form deadline was 15 January 2026. Keep the separate Reception application on your family calendar.
Morning sessions run from 8.45am to 11.45am; afternoons run from 12.30pm to 3.30pm. The school offers 15 or 30 hours a week. Parents can choose sessions, with examples including five mornings, five afternoons, or combinations of full days and a half-day. One example pairs Monday and Tuesday, 8.45am to 3.30pm, with Wednesday morning. That gives families alternatives to attending for a short session every weekday.
Nursery applications go directly to the school. To arrange a tour, email admissions@stjosephstrafford.co.uk or telephone 0161 973 4938. School uniform is required for all children; Petites Modes in Sale supplies new uniform, while the PTA offers pre-loved items.
