At a Glance

Sand, mud, water and building blocks give Wellfield's nursery learning a practical starting point. Children explore ideas through play indoors and outside, with adults planning activities and making room for children's own interests. This is a nursery day built around doing.

The 52-place provision belongs to Wellfield Infant and Nursery School on Church Lane in Sale, with distinct morning and afternoon classes. Entry begins in the term following a child's third birthday. Three- and four-year-olds can use the nursery's funded provision, while additional sessions and full days give families longer attendance options.

The Nursery Day

The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) sets the framework. In parent terms, that means developing conversation, movement and relationships alongside early reading, maths, creativity and understanding the world. Development Matters provides supporting guidance. Adult-planned experiences sit alongside play chosen by children, and plans can shift as their ideas develop.

Maths takes tangible form. Containers in different sizes let children investigate capacity through water, mud and sand; junk modelling and block play introduce shape. Numicon, dominoes and dice support early number work. Outside, skittles and target games bring counting into movement and play. These resources give children objects to compare and handle, rather than leaving mathematical ideas as words alone.

Language has its own place in the day. Ofsted's inspection on 13 and 14 March 2023 described nursery children hearing stories, singing, learning rhymes and encountering new words. The emphasis is on listening and spoken language at the beginning of their reading journey.

Care and Support

Early years teachers and teaching assistants form the teaching team. Parents can join Stay and Play sessions in classrooms and the outdoor environment, while workshops explain teaching approaches and suggest activities for home. That gives families ways to participate in their child's learning.

Support for additional needs includes an assistant SENDCo working with early years pupils and staff. The school uses The Zones of Regulation to help children recognise emotions and develop ways to manage them. Referrals to outside agencies require parental permission, keeping families involved in decisions about specialist support.

Children with identified health needs have an Individual Health Care Plan. Nursery families also remain under the Health Visitors' team, with the school asking for their child's Health Visitor details on admission forms. For food, nursery admission information includes healthy packed-lunch guidance, giving parents practical help with lunchbox choices.

Moving On to Reception

Attending Wellfield's nursery does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate application through the normal school admissions process.

For September 2026 entry, the application deadline was 15 January 2026. Trafford residents were directed to Trafford's online primary application; families living elsewhere were instructed to apply through their home authority. That deadline has passed. Treat the nursery place and the later school application as separate decisions, with their own administration.

Practical Information

Morning sessions run from 8.55am to 11.55am, afternoons from 12.20pm to 3.20pm, and full days from 8.55am to 3.20pm. The shorter sessions last three hours; a full day lasts six hours and 25 minutes. These are materially different attendance patterns for family planning.

The nursery offers 15 funded hours each week for three- and four-year-olds. Some children qualify for 30 funded hours. Extra sessions carry charges, and eligible families choosing full-time attendance pay for the time beyond those 30 hours. Contact the school for current charges.

Nursery registration and admission packs are handled by the school office. Call 0161 962 1828; tours can also be requested through the office. This provides a direct route to arranging a visit and registering interest.
