At the June 2022 inspection, a reading den, climbing wall and slides gave Brunel's youngest children ways to explore stories and develop physical skills. This is the on-site nursery at Brunel Primary & Nursery Academy in Saltash, with provision for two-year-olds.
Ofsted judged the school's early years provision Outstanding at the inspection on 21 and 22 June 2022. That judgement covers the early years provision within the school; it is not a separate nursery rating.
Stories provide a clear starting point for learning. In June 2022, nursery children were keen to interpret the illustrations in books in the reading den. Across early years, songs, rhymes and stories encouraged an interest in reading. For a young child, the emphasis is on engaging with books and finding meaning in pictures as well as words.
Physical activity has a distinct place alongside language. The early years climbing wall and slides encouraged children to build strength and coordination. These are purposeful opportunities to practise movement, rather than simply equipment to fill playtime.
The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) learning described in June 2022 also connected curiosity with communication. Language development was carefully planned, helping children explain what they knew and how they felt. Social learning mattered too: children practised sharing turns, treating others kindly and forming friendships. The practical implication is a nursery experience that prepares children to express themselves and participate with other children, alongside their developing physical skills.
Additional needs support sits within the school's SEND structure. A Special Educational Needs and Disability coordinator (SENDCo) works with teachers and teaching assistants, while parents can raise concerns with their child's teacher first. The SENDCo has a teaching degree, a Masters in Education and the NASCO award for coordinating special educational needs. This gives families an identified route for discussing learning or development concerns.
Support follows an Assess, Plan, Do, Review cycle, with parents involved in termly reviews. In the 2025/26 academic year, the school's support included individual or small-group speech and language work, involvement from the Early Years Inclusion Team and Language Link assessments for all EYFS pupils. These are school support arrangements, rather than a promise that every nursery child receives an intervention.
Care can also be personalised. Intimate Care Plans address children's personal hygiene needs, giving families a framework for discussing this aspect of care.
Reception admission. Attending Brunel's nursery does not guarantee a Reception place. Nursery attendance gives no priority under the 2027/28 admission criteria, so families must make a separate application through the normal admissions process. Cornwall residents apply using Cornwall Council's Common Application Form; families outside Cornwall use their own council's form. The application window runs from September to January, with forms returned by the deadline specified on them.
Transition preparation is a separate matter. During the summer term, children moving from Brunel's on-site nursery into school take part in shared play through the transition programme. For children needing additional support, transition meetings and supporting documentation help adults exchange information about individual needs. Familiarity and preparation do not change the admissions decision.
