Language gives Robert Peel’s nursery its direction: practical exploration sits alongside learning to speak, become independent and understand other people’s feelings. This is the nursery within Robert Peel Primary School on Dapifer Drive in Sandy, with published morning and afternoon groups.
Ofsted judged the school’s early years provision Good at its inspection on 7 and 8 May 2025. That judgement covers early years within the school; it is not a separate nursery rating.
Hands-on exploration is the approach to the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS). For parents, the emphasis is on children developing the skills to communicate, act independently and interact with others through practical experiences. Staff assess children’s development when they start, then use that starting point to shape learning across the year.
Early reading begins with noticing sounds and letters around them and within nursery activities. This gives children an introduction to written language through their surroundings, rather than treating reading as something that starts later. In May 2025, planned activities helped early years children develop their speech and communication; children also sustained their attention and played together cooperatively.
The social learning matters too. Children practised politeness with adults and one another, alongside learning to participate in shared activities. These are useful foundations for taking part in a group, as well as for learning itself.
In May 2025, early years children were content and received good care. The nursery staffing structure includes nursery assistants and an EYFS apprentice. Parents have a direct nursery email contact, while weekly newsletters arrive through ParentMail, giving families a regular connection with classroom learning.
Starting support includes visits before joining. For children with SEND, the school’s transition arrangements can include extra visits, a Transition Book to use at home and social stories when a change may be difficult. These give families concrete ways to help a child become familiar with new surroundings.
The September 2025 SEND Information Report describes support overseen by the SEND coordinator and SEND Manager, with class teachers meeting parents at least termly about additional needs and progress. Nursery changing facilities provide a practical care resource. The wider school site is accessible to wheelchairs and is on one level.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate application through Central Bedfordshire School Admissions Team and meet the normal Reception application deadline. The admissions criteria give no priority for attending the nursery: allocation considers care status, catchment, siblings and very exceptional medical grounds before other applicants.
Support with a change of class is separate from admission. For children with SEND, transition arrangements include opportunities for new staff to spend time with them in their existing class or setting, helping adults understand the child before the move.
The morning nursery group runs from 8.45am to 11.45am; the afternoon group runs from 12.30pm to 3.30pm. An optional lunch club occupies the interval from 11.45am to 12.30pm. These session boundaries matter when planning collection and the rest of a family’s day.
Nursery application forms go through the school office, which also handles tour bookings. Contact 01767 681185 or admin@robertpeel.beds.sch.uk; the nursery teaching contact is nursery@robertpeel.beds.sch.uk. For travel, the school asks drivers to use Dapifer Drive where possible and prohibits pedestrian access through the car park, so families should plan their route accordingly.
