Rhyme, sound recognition and the patience to stay with an activity give Mandeville’s nursery its clearest character. This is the nursery within Mandeville Primary School on West Road in Sawbridgeworth, forming part of its Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS). For the September 2026 intake, eligibility covered children born between 1 September 2022 and 31 August 2023.
Early years provision received a Good judgement at the Ofsted inspection on 21 and 22 February 2023. That judgement covers the school’s early years provision, rather than a separately inspected nursery.
Play and teaching work together here. Mandeville describes its early years approach as exploration and purposeful play alongside planned teaching, with independence as an aim. For parents, that means the EYFS experience combines children pursuing ideas with adults helping them develop their learning.
The February 2023 findings give this approach some concrete substance: staff incorporated children’s interests into planned activities and helped them persevere rather than quickly abandon a task. Staying with an activity matters. It gives children practice in sustaining attention as well as following their curiosity.
Early reading begins with listening. In February 2023, nursery children were learning to distinguish sounds, including rhyme and syllables. This puts attention to the sounds within spoken language before later reading work.
There was also a curriculum concern in February 2023: in a few subjects, the content taught in early years was insufficiently defined, making it harder for later teaching to build on it. The required action was to clarify the vocabulary, ideas and skills children should learn. This matters alongside the positive findings about interest-led activities and perseverance.
Two nursery teachers share the teaching week, with one working three days and the other two. A nursery nurse is also part of the team. This gives families a concrete picture of the adults involved in nursery provision.
The wider school team includes an Early Years Foundation Stage leader, a SENCo and learning support assistants with SEND roles. These are school-level roles; they provide the organisational context around the nursery’s own teaching team.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate Reception application through the normal admissions route, so choosing this nursery and securing a school place remain separate decisions.
For September 2026 Reception entry, online applications were through Hertfordshire’s school-place application route, with a deadline of 15 January 2026. That cycle is now past. Its dates should not be used as the timetable for a later intake.
Mandeville offers nursery provision of 15 or 30 hours. Those two weekly amounts are the useful starting point when considering how nursery fits family routines. Nursery applications go directly to the school, separately from the Reception process.
