Communication and language give Friarage’s early years provision its clearest character. The nursery belongs to Friarage Community Academy on Friargate in Scarborough, placing this first stage of education within a primary school.
At the inspection on 30 and 31 January 2024, Ofsted graded early years provision Good. That judgement covered the school’s early years provision as a whole; it was not a separate nursery rating. For parents, the useful distinction is between that early years assessment and the experience of an individual nursery child.
In January 2024, communication and language were a clear teaching priority across early years. Helping children develop how they express themselves gives families a concrete focus for conversations about their child’s learning.
Activities supporting children’s different skills were organised and delivered well, and many children progressed rapidly. There was a qualification: early years outcomes remained too low. The positive assessment of learning opportunities therefore sat alongside a concern about attainment, both of which matter when considering the provision.
Support for additional needs uses the school’s graduated approach: Assess–Plan–Do–Review. Parents help shape support plans with teaching staff and the SENCo, giving them a part in deciding what their child needs and checking the next steps. Most children with SEND learn with their classmates, with extra help potentially taking the form of focused group work or adapted resources.
Before a child joins, staff collect information from families and previous settings. Meetings or visits can be arranged according to need. This makes a child’s existing support and family knowledge part of the preparation for starting, rather than leaving those conversations until difficulties arise.
Staff development includes Thrive, support for speech and language, and approaches to emotional regulation. The school also works with Speech and Language Therapy and Occupational Therapy. These are school support arrangements, relevant to discussing a nursery child’s individual needs. Parents of children with a Graduated Response Plan are invited to review meetings at least three times a year. For younger children or those who do not speak, observation and creative methods help staff gather their preferences and feelings.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate application through their home local authority. For North Yorkshire residents, the route is North Yorkshire Council’s online application; families living elsewhere apply through their own council.
For September 2026 entry, the application deadline was 15 January 2026. Nursery attendance conferred no priority under the 2026–27 arrangements. Parents should treat choosing nursery and applying for Reception as separate decisions.
Transition support is a different matter. For children needing additional help with a move between classes, staff share information and can arrange extra visits or transition materials. Those measures help prepare a child for change; they do not alter the allocation of places.
Contact the academy on 01723 628610 or email info@friarageacademy.org.uk for nursery enquiries. To discuss additional needs directly with the SENCo, use send@friarageacademy.org.uk. Keeping that discussion alongside the nursery enquiry gives families a route to explain their child’s needs before joining.
