Morning play, familiar stories and a classroom shared with Reception give West Butterwick’s nursery its character. Nursery children attend in the mornings within the school’s Foundation Stage provision, with early learning beginning from age three. Nursery children share the Foundation Stage classroom with Reception and use an outdoor learning area.
The school aims to develop resilience and hope through its Christian ethos. Its whole-school Ofsted rating is Requires Improvement; that is not a separate nursery judgement.
Play shapes the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) curriculum here. For nursery children, the main focus is learning to communicate, developing physical skills and building the social and emotional foundations needed to join in with others. Adults organise activities, while children also select their own from the classroom and outdoor provision. There is room for both direction and choice.
Topics provide a starting point, but staff adjust plans around children’s interests and needs. Observation and teaching during an activity help adults decide what a child should try next. Simple maths and phonics are introduced when children are ready, rather than describing the nursery morning as a timetable of formal lessons. A PE session takes place each week.
Books are a daily feature. Adults read stories aloud and return to familiar books, giving children repeated opportunities to recognise how stories work. Practical early-years activities include exploring materials, planning what to make, constructing things and learning to handle simple tools safely. Cooking and food preparation also introduce hygiene routines. Devices and remote-controlled toys allow children to explore simple technology through their play. Together, these activities give a more concrete picture of the morning than the curriculum label alone.
An online platform carries photographs and observations home, helping families connect conversations with what their child has been doing. It provides a way to share classroom experiences beyond the morning session.
Support for additional needs sits within the school’s SEND arrangements. Children whose learning needs create barriers receive individually targeted support, and the school recognises the knowledge parents bring about their own child. A SENDCo and pastoral lead form part of the wider school team. For families, that provides identifiable roles for discussing learning needs and pastoral concerns, alongside the nursery’s observation of children during activities.
Attending this nursery does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate Reception application through the normal admissions route and meet the applicable deadline. Treat that application as a separate task when planning the next stage.
Sharing a Foundation Stage classroom gives nursery children familiarity with a space also used by Reception. That everyday connection is distinct from an entitlement to a school place.
The nursery operates a morning session, opening at 8.45am, with a stated duration of 3 hours 10 minutes. This pattern makes the morning the central childcare commitment for families.
